Case Study Report 3
Introduction
This is a case study on the practices that create a serene and conducive working environment
for employees in Pricewaterhousecoopers (PWC)-Australia.
In this study, I am going to give an overview of the company, which entails its
foundation, the kind of services it offers and their Human resource practices. I will then discuss
the factors that qualify Pricewaterhousecoopers Company to be a suitable place to work. After
analyzing the performance of the company I will recommend key practices pointed out in this
study to be applied by other companies in pursuit of accomplishing employee satisfaction and
loyalty. I will conclude by summarizing the key point in the report
Overview of the company
Pricewaterhousecoopers is a multinational company that offers accounting and auditing
services. Its headquarter is in London, United Kingdom. It is one of the leading auditing
companies in the world. It has a network in 158 countries including Australia. It was founded in
1998 as a merger between Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse. It offers services which
range from tax law compliance, advisory services on human resource, pensions, life and non-
life insurance and finally assurance offered by their certified public accountants. Assurance
basically entails the provision of relevant and sufficient accounting information to facilitate
informed decision making
Performance Overview
For an organization to achieve its objectives, it must strive to formulate favorable policies
in the human resource department that will lead to the creation of an efficient workforce. A good
working environment will motivate the employees to take up organization's desires to be their
own. This, in turn, will lead to profitability, good public image and creation of a competitive
advantage.
Two- factory theory states that employees tend to be satisfied by factors which are
unrelated to those that dissatisfy them. PriceWaterhouseCoopers has taken this theory into
practice in that both the hygiene and motivating factors have been realized. Hygiene factors
include safety, job security, favorable working conditions, good company policies and adequate
salaries. The motivating factors are implemented by recognizing each employee as an important
factor in the company, making their work interesting by allowing a flexible working schedule and
a company policy which prohibits an employee from working on their birthdays. The company

also allows its employees to pursue personal achievement by giving them opportunity and
resources to enroll for further training. Current employees are given priority in the event where
there is needs to fill vacant positions.
Acquired needs theory alludes that people are motivated by achievement, affiliation, and
power. At PriceWaterhouseCoopers Australia, employees are funded to pursue a career
development opportunity of their own choice and empowered to showcase their ideas and
inventions. The need for affiliation is satisfied in a way that new employees are assigned a
designated co-worker to help them be fast assimilated into the workplace. This instills a sense
of belonging to the employees. Letting employees decide when and how to work gives them a
sense of power thus enhancing their ability to change their working environment and make a
difference in the own lives and that of the company.
Goal-setting theory is a theory that stipulates setting goals become a major motivator for
employees when put into practice. PriceWaterhouseCoopers has set the general goals for the
whole organization. It also allows its employees to incorporate their own goals to those of the
company. This leads to company sense of direction. Set goals energize employees to wake up
every morning to work, provide a challenge and triggers creative thinking
Maslow’s theory of needs is a pyramidal representation of the hierarchical ranking of
needs, starting from the basic and the most urgent. Once a need is satisfied, it no longer
becomes a motivator. A higher need becomes a motivator. Employees at
PriceWaterhouseCoopers Australia are subjected to this hierarchy in a way that once the
company satisfies the lower level need; it gives an opportunity to the employees to focus on
their higher level needs. This creates a temporary motivator. Safety needs are satisfied by the
provision of sufficient security to each employee. Employees are also given time for fitness
practices bedsides the company prioritizing employee wellness. The title "work place genius"
instills each employee with a feeling of accomplishment. Providing training opportunities helps
employees to achieve their full potential and attain self-actualization
Recommendations
PriceWaterhouseCoopers Australia has the best employee culture, Human resource
practices, and corporate policies which have set a good public image that leaves everyone
envying the company. I recommend other organizations to adopt the following practices. Priority

of employee satisfaction is key to company success. New employees should be accorded a
warm welcome for them to feel recognized hence Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is achieved.
Employees should be given an opportunity to enroll for career development programs in
institutions of their own choice. By doing so, organizations are able to acquire more skilled
employees. The employees, on the other hand, will satisfy their need for personal achievement
as stipulated by the acquired needs theory
Decentralization of decision-making powers should be put into practice. By giving power
to employees, you not only enable the satisfaction of their need for control but you also give
them an opportunity to be creative thus leading to company efficiency.
Goal setting theory stipulates that companies should set general objectives and allow
employees to set their own. By doing so, companies will be able to provide direction, energize
their employees, provide a challenge and encourage independent thinking
Conclusion
From the study, PriceWaterhouseCoopers Australia has commendable employee
policies, human resource practices, and an efficient management thus leading it to be
considered as a desirable place of employment. The way a company treats its employees has a
great bearing on the ultimate level of its success. The company has capitalized on the skills of
its employees acquired from the funded human capital investment program to become the most
desired place of work. Through its cultural and strategy alignment, the company is able to reset
other organizations for a skill-led path. It is through motivation of employees that a company will
excel.
