In contrast, the suicide rate among women during birth was less than 50 percent
compared with 65 percent under abortion cases. Studies have also shown that, women who had
abortion are at a higher risk of cervical cancer than those who do not have abortion related cases
(Beckman). In addition, risks of subsequent liver and ovarian cancer have also been associated
with multiple and single abortions. There are reports of cases relating to Pelvic Inflammatory
Disease (PID) among women who had abortions (Institute). This disease affects the fertility as
well as causing ectopic pregnancy (Stretton). According to the Finland’s research, 30 percent of
women with Chlamydia infection during abortion risk getting PID within 3 weeks. Abortion
providers are advised to screen and diagnose such infection before carrying out abortion
procedures (Institute).
However, critics in favor of abortion have argued that the decision on whether to procure
an abortion or not is entirely a woman’s choice. The choice on when to have children is based on
relationship and financial stability as well as age (Beckman). Therefore, the government has no
authority to regulate women’s choices. Similarly, raising a child is a daunting task that requires
emotional, social and financial commitment.
Generally, forcing a woman to carry an unwanted pregnancy is worse than abortion
because the child will be raised in a destructive and non-conducive environment. Another
argument is that, the law does not allow a woman to risk her own health. However, many
pregnant women face the risk of unsafe abortion practices. In case of incest or rape, the baby
would be a reminder of a horrific experience to the mother. According to past reports, children
born as a result of rape cases face a high risk of abuse or neglect from their mothers.
