Abstract #2 on Venet
Venet explores the various activities that Mary Livermore in the company of some women
activists such as Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Candy, and Sarah Grimke, organized towards
attracting the attention of the society towards the need to change the perception that people hold
towards the females in the community. After the Civil War, Livermore continued to fight for the
rights of the women in the society although a majority of the literary materials concerning
abolitionism do not focus on her activities in the American society. Indeed, the diverse literature
on the struggle for the emancipation of the slaves in the American society does not document the
active roles that Livermore played in the antislavery campaign. The activities that Mary
Livermore undertook played a critical role in the emancipation of slaves, especially the women.
Apart from creating awareness, Livermore offered financial aids to enhance the process
of liberation in America. Mary Livermore supported the course of liberating the women in the
American society by attending fairs that abolitionists organized. Livermore also contributed
funds to help in the process of educating women on their rights, and sensitization of the
community on the need to abolish slavery and set the women free. Further, Livermore's life as a
Christian played a critical role in the enhancement of her struggle for the freedom of the slaves
and the improvement of the welfare of the women in the American society. Indeed, the church
offered Livermore the opportunity to write articles such as the New Covenant, through which she
immensely inspired the community on the need for the respect of human rights.
