In his essay, Rodriguez tries to have it all. He is intent on becoming a scholar while still

doing what he wants to do in the family set-up. He wants to remain part of the family while

pursuing his dreams. The problem is that the young man cannot do both effectively. He finds that

his studies demand more and more of his time and he has less and less for his family. He cannot

have his cake and eat it too because his home is just too different from his school (Velasco 3).

Eventually, he has to make a choice, and he chooses the school.

Thesis statement: one has to sacrifice previous and personal connections for him or her to get to

his or her goals; to achieve his or her desire.

Introduction

Rodriguez argues that he loved his family life as much as he loved his schooling. His scholarship

was his ticket out of poverty, and he did not want to give it up. Therefore, he made a choice to

leave his old life behind knowing that he could always come back.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, can be achieved without sacrifice. One has to let go of the past and

march into the future. Sacrifice comes in various forms. One can sacrifice his or her time in

pursuit of a goal.

The main aim is to make sure that whatever one seeks to achieve is worth it. It is unwise to

sacrifice family time for a career which makes a person miserable. Every sacrifice must be worth

it in the end. That said, making the decision to let something go is never easy, and it requires

strength of character.
