Edgar Allan Poe discussed his fiction theory in a wider range from childhood experiences
to adulthood. Sometimes it is necessary to ask some questions regarding fiction and how
childhood experience affects its outcome. According to Edgar Allan Poe, fiction is an action that
is not considered to be real. He described various aspects of childhood influence on fiction
regarding television, video games, and novels. Some television shows contain fictitious
storylines that involve acts of murder, violence, sadism, thunder and many more. Some of these
acts are exaggerated to bring out an exciting outcome to the audience. Some people usually see
these storylines as beneficial to them because they influence one’s mental and social
development. While some people have argued that fiction is a misleading aspect of life that can
be considered corrosive due to its lack of educative nature.
According to Edgar Allan Poe, fiction affects childhood experience due to its influence
on both moral and social development. The negative aspect of fiction to childhood experience
stems from a psychological effect that might affect the child while developing. It is arguable that
fiction might in some instances provide a positive outcome on the development of a child. It is
because of the literature analysis that it might provide to the child in a broader exploring of
ethical values. Childhood experience can also affect fiction due to the cumulative nature of the
morality that is involved in the made-up stories. Many adults might not remember the first or
three years of their childhood lives due to their early years of life. Even though most people do
not remember their early childhood years, Edgar Allan Poe argues that it is an experience that
will forever remain as part of their lives.
Parental behavior can have an influence on the childhood of a person. Edgar Allan Poe
notes that fiction plays a significant role in contributing to this role. Despite this, it has been
noted that fiction can also change the character of a child. In a social behavioral aspect, the

temperamental nature of a child can be influenced by violent fictitious themes. It is vital that
children do not get exposed to violent themes while growing because it might influence their
temper. Edgar Allan Poe reiterated that emotional support is vital for a child’s childhood
experience because it could help in keeping the child’s temper in check. The fiction violent
scenes are aggressive and usually influence the child’s thought in various ways that might slow
down his moral development. Educative fiction stories do exist but are few, which leads to a
violent theme exposure for children during their early years of growth.
Childhood experience can influence fiction depending on the manner in which the child
is brought up in his developmental stage. Edgar Allan Poe asserts that children who are raised in
humble homes can change over time due to fiction stories. It is usually believed that children
raised from supportive backgrounds usually grow up to be humble and kind. It can be a changing
aspect of nature in their adulthood stage due to the fictitious stories that they are exposed to
while growing up in the society. The theoretical nature of every fiction story creates an impact
on the life of a child. In this regard, Edgar Allan Poe states that a parent should be the sole guide
for a child during his early years of life. The fiction stories can be derived from various places
that a parent may or may not exist. The stories can be found in schools, at homes and other
places. Due to this, Edgar Allan Poe states that parents should always make their presence felt by
the child. A parent might not be aware of the effects of the fiction story to the child because the
effects might have a gradual effect that might take time to notice or not noticed completely.
Edgar Allan Poe came up with some of the ways that childhood experience can affect
fiction according to his analysis. He stated that at the age of three, a child’s fiction experience
can be affected by his home life nature. It basically means that a child who spends more time at
home at a tender age of three can experience some psychological effects related to fiction.

Although a study research that was carried out revealed that children from a caring background
are usually humble in their adulthood, Edgar Allan Poe states that all that can change due to
fiction. He emphasizes on a fictitious story that might negatively affect a child. He further
explains that the effects of this might last an entire lifetime depending on the prolonged exposure
of these stories.
He also noted personal relations between the parents such as divorce as another factor
that influences fiction in childhood. Edgar Allan Poe state that divorce between parents is an
issue that can categorically influence fiction due to the effect that it usually has on a child.
Children of ages of three to five have been stated as the most affected by parent’s separation.
During this time, childhood experience becomes complicated that the child ends up finding
solace in fiction as explained by Edgar Poe. According to him, fiction can play a role in straining
the relationship that a child has with a parent especially after a separation. The best way to avoid
the whole scenario is for a parent to be present in the child’s life during both bad and good times.
Edgar Allan Poe explains that a working parent can positively influence the life of a child
and sway him away from fiction. A research carried out revealed that those children that were
raised by parents who went to work spent more time in schools. A child who spends more time
in school spends less time watching television shows than the one that then one indoors most of
the time. Those who spent more time at home are exposed to various fiction stories that might
have a negative impact on their moral development. Fiction can influence childhood at this stage
because of the traumatizing violence that a child might witness on the television.
Edgar Poe also stated that fiction can have a greater influence on children from a lower
socioeconomic class a compared to those from the high class. It is because children who grow up
in poor background normally grow up with a negative working memory. Fiction tends to play a

role in this regard because the children in their adulthood normally have a lot to contend with
during their activities. Edgar Poe further states that fiction influences their development due to
the many multiple objects that they end up carrying in their minds. In spite of this, Edgar Poe
asserts this factor to categorically affect some people.
