Analytical Summary of Scarborough Neighborhood Health Assessment
This community health assessment was carried out so as to establish a succinct
understanding of the geopolitical neighborhood of Scarborough and the nature of its
demographics. The study also aimed at developing the potential and actual abilities and strengths
of residents. That was achieved by creating a professional and friendly interaction with the
residents so that they could cooperate and respond to interviews and give their opinions on the
status of the neighborhood. The data analyzed from this research would be resourceful when
making planning strategies in the future. It would also be applied for capacity building purposes.
Scarborough Village also referred to as Markham-Eglinton or Scarborough Heights, is
the neighborhood that surrounds my site of placement. It is found in the eastern neighborhood of
Toronto in Ontario, Canada. According to the map of Toronto, Scarborough Village has several
houses that are either privately or publicly owned, apartment complexes, plazas of strip malls,
several condominiums, and schools.
The assessment created the awareness that there is a need for a way of building a healthy
community in the neighborhood. Whereas medical and scientific researchers have not established
a single method that can be applied to create a healthy community, there an approach referred to
as ‘healthy communities approach’ (Frumkin, Frank & Jackson, 2004). The purpose of the plan
is to give principles to residents so as to guide them in establishing their preferred goals and
vision for their future. I would recommend this method to be applied and followed by
Scarborough Village because it would assist the members in mitigating issues in the economic,
social, environmental, and physical sectors.
The ‘healthy communities approach applies five strategies that expand the capacity of a
community to improve the well-being and health of the residents. These five strategies include

political involvement, community involvement, multi-sectoral collaboration, healthy public
policy, and engagement of individuals in promoting healthy living standards and conditions
(Gladen, 2011). The strategies do not only target health improvements; they also focus on
empowering the residents financially and economically.
Community involvement implies that individuals are involved in sectors such as physical,
social, and mental so as to be part of the decision-making group. I would encourage all the
residents of the neighborhood to seek involvement and participate in activities that work towards
the empowerment of the community. Such promotion leads to empowerment in health, finance,
and cooperation due to understanding between the members.
Inter-sectoral partnerships would involve all sectors such as health, government,
education, business, community services, as well as the voluntary services (Jackson & Sinclair,
2012). It is recommendable that there is a significant number of individuals in the neighborhood
who engage in the provision of voluntary services. The government should chip in richly by
empowering the youth financially and establishing youth development programs. That would
create a forum for the youth to serve the neighborhood and gain skills in various sectors such
masonry. That results in a drastic reduction of poverty and unemployment.
A Healthy Public Policy should also be introduced in Scarborough Village. That policy
would promote development in other sectors other than the health sectors (Jackson & Sinclair,
2012). Areas that would benefit from the program include the transportation and food policy. It
would also involve establishing various options regarding transportation. Recreation
opportunities and community design would also be improved.
Finally, I would recommend an asset-based approach. That would be an excellent idea to
enable the development of the community by empowering the individuals and companies in the

region (Nakkula, 2010). It allows the residents to identify their strengths, knowledge, and assets
possessed that could assist in improving the community. It would also help in eradicating
extreme poverty, health issues such as obesity, and homelessness.
