Joseph Kelly’s biography is interesting in various ways. Firstly, he was born and stayed in
Charleston and became a scholar and professor of English in his home college. This is quite
interesting because he had focus on improving lives of students his home place. Secondly, the
book Seagull Reader: Stories that he edited was favorite to many as it captivated them. Besides
the book is flexible to any course unlike other authors who focus on specific subject making him
quite interesting. Thirdly, besides his focus on editing, he actively participated in politics
especially in faculty senate. This is quite interesting because he is all round.
The author’s book America’s Longest Siege: Charleston, Slavery, and the Slow March
toward Civil War is one I have read. Something I like about this book is that its topics were
captivating enough to bring a debate centered by Charleston. This debate was over tragic
secession and slavery that affected both the South and the city. Besides, this book gives a new
take on culture and Civil war making it inevitable.
Joseph Kelly’s influence on his country is something I am narrowing down for a research
topic. His biographical information sources are from the books he edited such as The Seagull
Reader: Stories, Our Joyce: From Outcast to Icon and America's Longest Siege: Charleston,
Slavery, and the Slow March to Civil War.
