Anthropology in Science fiction
Science fiction describes the use of imaginative concepts like advanced technology,
science, extraterrestrial life, time travel, and spaceflight. Science fiction explores the possible
consequences of scientific as well as other innovations. Science fiction often sidesteps the
paranormal unlike in fantasy. This paper presents the anthropology in science fiction as observed
in the movies “Philadelphia (1993)” and “Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)”. The paper describes the
comparative analysis of the above films regarding the theme, “anthropology in science fiction.”
The two movies contrast each other, based on theme and the featured content.
In the movie, Philadelphia (1993), the main character, Andrew Beckett tries to move
away from the reality in is a condition. He tries to conceal his AIDS diagnostic results from his
lawyers and workmates. However, his efforts to get away from the reality fail when his lawyer
finally gets the informed about his HIV positive status. In the process, his law counterpart finds
the reality of his condition. However, his lawyer, Miller was not comfortable to associate with
him, on the basis that he would contract the disease as well. The fiction illustrates portrayed in
the way Beckett imagines hiding his AIDS status even at the expense of losing his lawyer. Also,
Miller's imagination of contracting the disease from Brackett draws the fiction into how AIDS is
contracted. Moreover, the association of Kaposi Sarcoma with AIDS was not only unveiling the
lack of science behind the cause of the disease but also illustrated the fear among the
populations. The disease brought desperation among the people in the community. On the other
hand, the film Mad Max: Fury Road illustrates how Max Rockatansty, a survivor, in the nuclear
holocaust is made the supplier of blood for the sick war boy. Moreover, Max is strapped into
Nux’s car, to continue supplying blood for the to the sick war boy. In the film, it may not be able
to imagine how Max survives the condition. With clouds of dust, the mechanical impact, as well
as the psychological horror, inflicted, Max was steady and appeared normal. These conditions
were only possible in the presence of an imaginative mind. Unlike in the other film, the
conditions in this film do not match with the real-life conditions, despite illustrating the normal
activities.
The twentieth century marked the rapid the technological advancement in the United
States. The technology-enhanced more innovation and faster service delivery. In the film
Philadelphia, it was impossible for Beckett to hide his condition due to the automation of the
diagnostic services. Although the doctor tried to excuse himself during the case, it was obvious
that Miller would obtain the information since the diagnostic information was store at the hard
disk that would be easily reached by other users. The anthropology of science fiction is therefore
not applied in the film. On the other hand, the film Mad Max: Fury Road exemplifies how
technology increases the rate of service delivery. For instance, it was easy to save the lives of
the war boy amidst the war by using Max, a universal donor to be the blood bag. Despite the
possibility of the process, the time, nature and impact of the process do not match with the reality
of nature. This film illustrates the anthropology in science fiction, where technology overruns the
reality.
During the trial in the film “Philadelphia,” Beckett collapses during the trial, as the
pressure overwhelms his effort to sustain the weight of the facts. However, Becket later is voted
the favor by the jury. Despite being awarded back his pay, Beckett feels unable to live further
because of the psychological and the emotional pain resulting from his AIDS condition. The film
depicts the human weaknesses that cannot be overcome even with the available technology. This
is illustrated in Beckett’s death. This, however, contrasts the condition in the “Mad Max: Fury”
in which the human strength is magnified beyond imagination. For instance, Max, at the front
line of the car survives the attacks during the war, while the people inside the car were hurt.
Also, Max after being saved by Joe was still able to transfuse the blood to Furiosa. As a result,
her life is saved. With consideration of the normal human health, it was beyond imagination for
Max to be conscious and donate more blood after a long time of blood drain during the fight.
The two movies contrast each other regarding the review of the theme. The film
“Philadelphia,” illustrates the reality of human nature. The film unveils the human fear,
misunderstanding and other weaknesses that defined their destiny. On the other hand, the film
“Mad Max: Fury Road” praises the abstract human nature. In this case, the human nature is
surrounded by an extraordinary strength that could not be overcome by the challenges of nature.
As a result, the human strength defined his destiny. Unlike the other case, this film illustrates
anthropology in science fiction.
