Communication Quarterly, 78(2), 194-196. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/2329490615569049
The article describes a scene explicitly in a meeting hosted by a multinational
manufacturer chief executive officer. Employees’ productivity in any given firm is positively
impacted by empowering the employees. The aspect of empowering employees makes them feel
appreciated and part of the company. This is what the CEO was doing in this case by introducing
a program to improve the sense of empowerment in employees. The employees were to identify
the delta gap between the current working conditions and what the new plan would offer.
According to one employee, the metrics given by the employees were fabricated on
pressure basis from the management. It was, therefore, established the problem was with the
system and not the employees (DeKay, 2015, p.195). The CEO when giving his speech at the
end of the session assured the employees that the problem would be investigated and resolved.
Finding a solution to such a hurdle would increase the sense of empowerment and eventually
improve the productivity of employees.
The CEO commended the employee for “sharing this problem with me (DeKay, 2015,
p.196).” Such a statement indicates that there was the need to come up with professional
channels of delivering change messages in an organization. Any change process in an entity
needs to be systematic and inclusive to reduce cases of resistance. Empowered employees feel
appreciated being part of the decision making when it comes to organizational culture change.
Communicating in the best-prescribed methods hastens any decision to be made by the
management.
