DARK SIDE TO SPORT
Introduction
For long time, professional athletes together with the future athletes who are yet to
become the champions of the future have been facing a lot of controversial issues. While there
are many varied challenges, the use of supplements has sparked heated debate by the mainstream
media. There are a lot of cases which has been reported where the athletes use the supplements
such as energizers so as to boost their energy during the race. The use of such supplements has
been traced back to the Olympic Games which were held in Greece. During such time, there
were athletes competitors who consumed herbs and mushrooms so as to boost their performance.
In the process of athlete's habits of enhancing the performance, gaining of the greater power,
deriving the supernatural strength, the greedy has finally driven a lot of athletics to the dark side
of the cryogenic world. There is no longer fairness in competition because a sober athlete cannot
be compared with the athlete who has used supplements so as to gain more energy. The
extensive use of the supplements is one of the issues that have raised controversial debate across
the world on honesty issues during the competition process. The ‘dark side to sport' compromises
the fairness in the competition. The Olympic body has begun banning athletes who are found to
use the supplements or engage in any of the activities which compromise the basic policy. The
dark side to sports has diverse negative consequences. This essay discusses the ‘dark side to
sport' shading light on key issues such as stereotyping of the people who participate in sports,
exploitation of African American athletes among many other issues which will be discussed in
this essay.
Exploitation of African American Athletes

DARK SIDE TO SPORT
There are a lot of issues which surrounds the welfare off the college students, especially
for the athletes, is their inability to raise the monetary compensation. College football can be
regarded as the multi-million dollar industry, which shapes the economy of the institution in a
major way. The colleges are in one way or another benefitting from the active engagement of the
students to the sports as it directly contributes to the output of the college (Erick, 2010). While
the students who participate in the athletics are likely to receive the scholarship from such
institution, it has been noted that the low graduation rate of African Americans students who
engages in athletics present a big challenge in what is termed as the ‘dark side to the sport.'
There is also the great disparity between the graduation rate of the native whites and the
African Americans students whose ratio comprise mainly of the black students. For example, in
NCAA Division I basketball of men, it has been realized that the graduation of the white students
is higher by 32 points as compared to African American grandaunts. Such difference is really
big, and in the process, a lot of male students will be locked out of the college sports. There are a
lot of incidences also where the African Americans students have been neglected by the NCAA.
To solve the challenge, the NCAA should first begin by assessing the magnitude of the enormity
of the issue paying attention to the black race. While NCAA is a Major body which deals with
the protection of the well-being of multiracial students, white and black, the body should assess
the damaged which has so far been caused by the successive exploitation of their students in one
ways or another for the monetary benefits of the learning institution. African Americans athletics
should be treated equally just like the way through which the white students are catered for
(Sullivan, 2011)
Stereotyping of people involved in sport

DARK SIDE TO SPORT
The issues of stereotyping have become an issue where the society fights against the hard
working athletes. For example, there is a common stereotype which believes that ‘all the black
athletes are rappers in future and all the rappers in their lifetime will want to be athletes.' Such is
a wrong assumption which will derail the progress of the athletes the future. The stereotype can
be regarded as the ‘enemy within' which seeks to bring down the hardworking individuals.
More often when they are in the competition, the female athletes normally break the limits of the
current norms of the society. Instead of praising them, supporting and regarding them as society
heroes, the hardworking females in some societies are stereotyped by being linked to having
male genes. While there is nothing wrong for one to be a hardworking athlete, the societies
efforts of striving to bring down the masculine domain of the athletics who engages in the sport.
While the leading females' students are mistaken to be the gays, it is crucial to restrict the
participation in athletics particularly on issues which make the assumption of the social
orientation of the female athlete (Magee, 2013). The issue is generally sensitive and goes against
the principles of the LGTB community as a whole.
Emotional and Social Constrains
The athletes face the controversial issues revolving around the emotions and the social
challenges which in a major way has contributed to the dark side of the sport. The parents can
contribute to the success of their children who are athletes by supporting them emotionally. It is
true that athletic, in respect to those who want to do it as a professional is the uneasy task. It
involves a lot of exercises, and when left to perform alone, the young athletes can easily be
discouraged. Emotional support is, therefore, influential as it enables them to reach their goal.
The use of such supplements has been traced back to the Olympic Games which were held in

Greece (Erick, 2010). During such time, there were athletes competitors who consumed herbs

longer fairness in competition because a sober athlete cannot be compared with the athlete who
has used supplements so as to gain more energy. The extensive use of the supplements is one of
the issues that have raised controversial debate across the world on honesty issues during the
competition process. Parents should be in forefront discouraging the young athletes against using
any harmful substances are it demoralizes the ethics.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is evident that the athletics have been compromised by several issues
which can be categorized as the dark side of the sport. The leading issues include the exploitation
of the American athletes, stereotyping of the people who are involved in the sport and the
emotional constraints. There are several incidences which have been reported to violate the
ethics of the athletics, such as using of the energizers by some athletes to be very competitive.
Yes, the issue of using supplements contributes to unfair competition. Tough measures should be
taken against the athletes who use the supplements. When it comes to stereotyping, the society
should treat the excellent athletes with great dignity which they deserve. Issues of stereotyping
will undermine the progress of the athletics in a big way. There are a lot of incidences also where
the African Americans students have been neglected by the NCAA. To solve the challenge, the
NCAA should first begin by assessing the magnitude of the enormity of the issue paying

well-being of multiracial students, white and black, the body should assess the damaged which
has so far been caused by the successive exploitation of their students in one ways or another for
the monetary benefits of the learning institution. If such issues are observed, then athletics will
be relatively fair.
