Apple’s Policies and Initiatives
Companies produce different products depending on the area of specialization. These
products, however, have impacts on the environment. Unless the effects are adequately managed,
they may lead to fatal consequences that are detrimental to environmental development and
preservation. Companies have consequently come up with remedial initiatives that help in the
use and disposal of their brand products in a way that is friendly to the environment. Apple is a
company with elaborate and well-crafted policies and environmental initiatives that deal with
their brand products because it has central claims and objectives in the initiate that speaks for
itself.
The company brags and enjoys a lot of environmental progress, thanks to their initiatives,
which have been successful passé. During their recent launch of a new iPad as well as smaller
iPhone, the company took the opportunity to showcase something else that surprised many: their
environmental initiatives. The principal claims of her actions include the following. The first one
is the forestry agenda, which aims at protecting more than 35,000 acres of forest in the eastern
U.S. and another 1 million acres of forest in China (Apple 8-32). Moreover, "The rollout of Liam
(the 29-armed research robot) that tore down the defunct iPhones for recycling. This is by far the
most significant claim in Apple's environmental initiative" (Freedman). Finally, Apple is about
93% reliant on renewable sources of energy. This claim is on course to achieve 100% reliant on
renewable sources. The company has reached 100% renewable sources reliant in 23 countries

including in the United States of America. Coupled with other initiatives, the management has
tirelessly worked with like-minded companies, governments and organizations to help protect
and conserve the environment in many countries where the company operates. The results of this
association are indeed visible from the progress the company has made concerning
environmental conservation.
Initiatives can be mere proposals and claims if not put into practice. Having good plans is
of no use if not implemented. Many companies have good plans and initiatives that would bring
success to them. Failing to put the programs in practices, however, leaves them as claims. Apple
unlike other companies has tangible evidence in support of their environmental initiatives. These
proofs are, nonetheless, spread across the many countries they operate in. They include solar
expansion in China, which is one of the many countries where Apple operates. In April and
October 2015, the company announced solar power expansion in China. This was through the
launch of a massive clean energy program in October 2015. It further announced a new project
of solar power installation in Apple’s China factories (Greenpeace.org). This is a proof that the
claims are implemented hence evidence to the same.
Secondly, Apple’s partnership with Chinese suppliers is evident and has greatly helped in
the deployment of solar power. Faxconn is one of their main partners. Moreover, the 35,000
acres of forest in the U.S. and another 1 million acres in China is under the protection of Apple
hitherto. This has greatly helped in environmental preservation in the two countries, which is a
proof of Apple's efforts in protecting the environment (Apple 10). In addition, by 2016, 96% of
the electricity used at Apple’s global facilities came from renewable energy. This reduced its
carbon emission by 585,000 metric tons. Apple also uses 99% of recycled materials in packaging
their products. This helps in saving trees hence conserving the environment. Recycling materials

do not include only saver trees but also keeps the environment from unnecessary wastes. This is
indeed a good initiative towards conservation of the environment. Finally, Apple is ahead of all
its major competitors when it comes to replacing brominated flame-retardants and polyvinyl
chloride with greener replacements in its products, mainly the iPod (Ford par. 12).
Critics concur with the progress made by the company in its environmental initiatives.
There are, however, obstacle and a lot that needs to be done to fully realize its plans. The
following evidence point out the fact that Apple has not achieved much of this initiatives. Much
of the energy currently used in China comes from coal. This source of energy is the most carbon-
intensive fuel. This shows that Apple’s has not done much in reducing global warming and
taking care of the environment. Another proof that Apple has not and not achieving her claims
any sooner is the habit of continually rolling out new products. By doing this, the company is
contributing largely to consumerism that is extremely difficult to ever neutralize from a carbon
standpoint. Lastly, though built in a solar-powered factory, Apple's phones are shipped via
planes powered by fossil fuels (Cook and Jardim 8). They are consequently charged by energy
sources that are dangerous to the environment such as coal.
In conclusion, it is prudent to infer from the evidence given that Apple is one of the few
companies that have worked extra hard to not only protect but also conserve the environment
through the elaborate environmental initiatives. Government and other environmental agencies
should, therefore, joins hand with Apple to protect the environment. There exists a gap between
the initiatives and their full realization. This gap can only be filled when other parties join hands
in the fight.
