Appreciation on Autumn in Peiping
The article is about Beijing's autumn by a famous contemporary Chinese writer by the
name Yu Dafu. The article talks about autumn in Peiping, Northern China. The author
describes autumn in the North of China as limpid, serene and melancholy. While that of the
South, the author describes as depicted by slow withering plants, moist air dominated by
rainy weather. According to the author of the article, autumn is synonymous with the South
as the North has not witnessed autumn in many decades. Finally, the author summarizes the
story by portraying the North of Beijing as the best place to visit to enjoy the flavor of
autumn.
The author describes the characteristics of autumn in Beijing, China. The article gives
the account of the environment found in both North and South. He particularly provides the
early morning conditions when one wakes up. During autumn in Beijing, the ground is filled
with flower-like pistils from the locust trees. Stepping on the pistils, one feels the tiny and
soft particles underneath their foot. The sporadic feeble chirping of cicadas characterizes
autumn in the North. The cicadas are audible thanks to the plenitude of the trees and the low
elevation that provide for their dwellings in Peiping. These insects are, however, very rare in
the South only found in the suburbs or hills.
The weather in the North and South are different as while the autumn rains in the
North, the South is more appealing and temperate. To protect the body from the weather

during autumn, the townsfolk wear thick clothing either lined or unlined, and occasionally,
one is likely to notice some people with a pipe in mouth. Another wonderful sight in autumn
in the North is fruit trees. For instance, jujube trees which grow around the corner of houses.
These trees also grow at the foot of a wall, besides latrines or the outside of the kitchen exit.
At the autumn peak, jujubes, which are similar to dates in shape or pigeon eggs, appear as
light green and yellowish tiny elliptic leaves.
According to the author, the golden days in the year occur in the North around July
and August. This is the period when the leaves turn ruddy and fall, with jujubes, persimmons,
and grapes all ripening. The period is characterized by strong northwest wind blowing to
create a dusty world of the North. Exclusive features, for instance, the moon-lit Ershisi
Yangzhou Bridge, River Qiantangjiang’s flowing sea tides, the shroud of mist at Putuo
Mountain, and lotuses at the Lizhiwan Bay characterize autumn in the South. The autumn in
the North and the South supplement each other, the author compares them by equating this
feature of mutual co-existence to the way perches are to crabs, and yellow dogs are to camels.
The article is full of ambiguity regarding the description of the Beijing’s autumn. The
author has not come clearly to differentiate between the North and South, where autumn is
most experienced. This leaves the reader to be confused about where specifically; one is
likely to enjoy the effects of autumn. There is an attempt to indicate that, the South is the best
area to witness the autumn but the author completes the article describing how he could wish
autumn lasted forever at the North. Remember, at the beginning of the story, the autumn at
the North was described as having disappeared for many decades.
The story is full of contrasts such as when the author describes the fallen flower-like
pistils from the locust trees as odorless and on the other side, leaves from wutong trees as
enough to inform one of the starting of autumn. The contrast creates variety for the visitors

who might want to sample different features that make autumn in Beijing unique and special
for people who like the spectacle of the autumn in the country. The author likens the different
autumns in the North and South as supplementing each other.
There is confusion in the sentence structure and the use of descriptive words. This
explains the reason as to why the story is not captivating and interesting. This, in my opinion,
creates a sense of boredom while reading the article. A story like this one should be
captivating to the reader, as it should market Beijing autumn to the likely visitors to the
scenery and the unique features to make the article come out as a special piece that is well
researched and thought out.
A proper review would require having to rewrite the article by making it interesting to
read and providing the necessary information. Reading the article topic, ‘autumn in Peiping,’
the expectation is that, the author would concentrate to write exhaustively on the North. But
the writer sways away from that and attempts to bring in the autumn of the South. This
divided attention in wanting to provide information generally has affected the article’s
message and in the process compromised the theme.
