Introduction

The use of the internet’s social media is inevitable. 73% of teenagers aged between 12 to 17 use

Facebook and in 20 years’ time, it will be impossible to separate the teenagers from the screen.

Moreover, the adults are not left behind. A high percentage use their time on this platforms. With

the new technological inventions, everything is just a click away. However, these advantages come

at a price. This paper demonstrates negative impacts of the media and gives viable solutions.

Summary

Media has significantly changed our culture since the introduction of the radio. New inventions

and creations have been experienced today, and social media is the latest invention. Facebook,

Twitter, Instagram among others have made their way into homes. There are a lot of benefits

associated with programs such as easy communication, motivation on various aspects such as

health by getting applications such as Jawbone which provides the necessary tips. Also, the

connect people globally and give updates on current affairs. Great things like seeing your loved in

an instant in now possible. However, this advantages come at a price.

Argumentative and synthesis

 Increase in the theme of violence in the media. (Smith and Donnerstein), those viewers

who watch violence scenes have higher chances of being violent. From the survey, boys

grew to become more violent after media violence exposure. Similar results were obtained

from regardless of intellect, social class, and parenting. From the research done by

Anderson (2002), video games have a negative impact on the players due to the roles that

the player takes.

 Laziness and creativity level decreased - It is reported that students who continuously use

social media such as Facebook perform poorly and have lower grades compared to those

students whose use these platforms less often (Rosen, 2011).

 Shortened concentration and attention span. People are used to reading short texts because

of character limitation. Long paragraphs messages are therefore uninteresting to these

people since they are only interested in the main point (Debyshire, 2009).

 Influence on body image. From the study done by Halliwell, it is evident that the influence

of the media plays an enormous role in women’s final decision about cosmetic surgery

(Halliwell, 2013). Increase in eating disorders in adolescent girls who want to lose weight

and become skinny like the models or perfect and beautiful like the women seen on

televisions (Battles, 2009).

 Negative psychological changes. People who use social media platforms are found to be

attention seekers and tend to narcissism. This leads to annoyance to other members and

results to cyberbullying. These may, in turn, lead to psychological changes. Any bullying

is a crucial contributor to depression development which may lead to suicide (Debyshire,

2009).

 Change in people’s culture. Jamaica, media has contributed in the change of people’s lives

for instance dressing, language, individualism, gender roles, and family values (Hazen &

Jain, 2007).

 Other arguments include: increased terrorism and crime rate, children stumbling to

unfitting contents like pornography, avenues for sex predators and serial killers to get their

victims, fake information spreading quickly, poor academic performance on students and

promotion of drug and alcohol.

 Solution. Censoring of the media content should be the parent’s crucial role, and by doing

so, the parents will have done their best to bring up an adult with good ethics and morals.

More companies dedicated to reducing and eliminating violence in films should be

established for example Media scope. Teenagers should be sensitized on aggression,

violence, and sex to uphold their morals and judgment. Advocating for media literacy and

teaching to women and girls by teaching them how to analyze, interpret, understand and

inoculate themselves against messages from the media. People should also know that no

one is perfect hence no need to imitate others. One should live their life peacefully without

pressure from other people. Social media platforms should be regulated and controlled to

ensure that the information being communicated does not contribute to crime or any other

illegal activities. Parents should strictly monitor their children for proper usage of the

media content and their time. People should try to provide enough and ample time for face

to face communication and interaction for instance by spending time with friends, family

and new people in your life. Each person should learn to, moderate their time and access

to social time to invest the time and energy in other things. To enhance the concentration

span, one should always take breaks when working online. People should uphold empathy

before posting comments. Everyone should respect each other person’s opinion since we

are all different and avoid cyberbullying. It’s also necessary to follow inspiring people in

this networks rather than wasting time on unimportant issues. These people can help

inspire someone to take action and better themselves.

 Media has the potential to reduce aggressiveness and promote positive interactions

(Woodard & Mares, 2005).

 Media has enhanced and increased the overall knowledge among the people and children

(Woodard & Mares, 2005).

 Media is an excellent resource since it helps people embrace the diverse technology

(Woodard & Mares, 2005).

 Media is informative to teenagers and kids on issues of drugs, alcohol, sex, and smoking

(Woodard & Mares, 2005).

 Not all student who use Facebook check their accounts when doing their work (Rosen,

2011).

 Not everyone who uses these platforms is an attention seeker (Rosen, 2011)..

Conclusion

Media influence is inevitable with the growing technology. These influences are likely to change

the reality, morals, body image, sexual attitude and drinking behavior. From the above discussion

on the impacts of media, it is evident that the negative impacts outweigh the positive impacts.

Therefore, no one should fall into any media trap. The use of media creates an emptiness in young

children and teenagers which is irreversible.
