ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 2
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the argument some people believe on marijuana
being legalised in UK for medical purposes. It will show whether marijuana should be legalised
or not. This paper will show the benefits of marijuana to the users, its medical purposes,
demerits of marijuana, argue on both sides (for and against) and show why it should not be
legalised. Marijuana which is used as a drug is commonly abused by the users and this in turn
affects their health. This paper will show all the effects of marijuana both negative and positive
to the users. It will also mention the common sicknesses caused by abusing marijuana. Its
scientific name is Cannabis but in UK it is commonly known as hemp. Marijuana can be taken
through many ways, one can chew its seeds and leaves or put them on a drink and can also be
smoked.
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 3
The controversy on whether marijuana should be legalized has been of great interest
recently. The issue has been raised in almost every corner of the world. Different members,
organization, and health sectors have given their different and various views on the topic. Some
strongly believe that it should be made legal claiming that it has several healing benefits while
others are against the notion. The truth of the matter is still not known well. People just argue
about this issue and those who win the argument carry the day. Time and again, claims that
marijuana can be used as a medicinal drug have also been raised. Several lab experts have
worked tirelessly trying to establish the truth of the matter. Some have clues that the drug itself
has healing effects but the major problem and concern is how one can isolate it so that it can
only bring only the healing effects without the enormous side effects. In the UK, the motion is
highly discussed. Residents want it to be passed in the parliament so that it is made legal,
meaning no one will be prosecuted if found under its influence (Sarah, 2016).
Medical experts have carried out lab tests and have realized that marijuana contains
cannabinoids which are of two types namely CBD and THC. THC make users have increased
appetite hence consuming a lot. Moreover, it helps in reduced nausea, relieved pains and can
also help in preventing inflammation and control muscle complications. TCH is the component
that makes people ‘high’. On the other hand, CBD can be very useful in controlling seizures
and can aid in treating mental disorders (Aggarwal 2007, p.52).
Besides the vital benefits of marijuana, the side effects are sound and cannot be ignored
at any point. For instance, TCH which is a major component of the drug affects how the user’s
body function. It makes one ‘high’ and can do whatever thing comes in his/her mind. It takes
full control of all organs of the body such that one cannot think and act rationally. The mode
in which it gets to the body is not of great interest, whichever way it finds its way to the body
it causes hazardous effects. It can lead to high blood pressure, affect the immune system,
together with the central nervous system. Research has shown that most of the marijuana

addicts usually die of heart attack and lung cancer as well. The drug is also known to cause
dizziness, dry mouth, short-term brain loss and great anxiety (American Lung Association,
2012).
Marijuana as a medicine
Marijuana can be used to purposely bring healing effects on the user’s body. A close
look at the way it can be used as medicine will well prove the claim. It can treat glaucoma, a
condition which causes increased pressure in the eyeball. Glaucoma interferes with the optic
nerve making the patient have blurred vision. One can also lose vision totally. Once used,
marijuana tends to lower the pressure around the eye hence aiding d in low chances of
becoming blind (Aggarwal 2007, p.34).
Smoking marijuana can also help in improved lung health. Research has shown that
tobacco users usually end up experiencing lung malfunction with time but at the same point of
time, marijuana user has been found to possess an increased lung capacity which is possibly
caused by the user’s taking a deep breath while smoking the drug (American Lung Association,
2012).
CBD, a chemical found in marijuana, help to curb the spread of cancer in user’s body.
Cannabidiol prevents the cancerous cell from spreading by making a change in a gene known
as Id-1. This has been proven by researchers when they tried to treat breast cancer in the lab
using cannabidiol and the process worked well. The use of cannabidiol made the cells less
aggressive in spreading. The researcher also found out that compounds in cannabis were in a
position to kill cancerous cells.
It can be used to treat diaphragm malfunction. Gupta, a medical practitioner, and a great
researcher found that Chaz who was using the drug as medicine was able to be relieved his
pains. Chaz had a condition known as myoclonus diaphragmatic which had resisted all the
strong drugs prescribed by the doctors. Gupta found that Chaz’s condition was brought to a
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 5
controllable level immediately he smoked marijuana. Marijuana is able to calm diaphragm
muscles.
It is vital in reducing arthritis discomfort. Marijuana helps to alleviate pain, causes
reduced swelling of cells and can induce sleep. Researchers in rheumatology conducted a study
and found that patients they had exposed to cannabinoid had improvement as far as sleep and
relieved pain is concerned compared to those who were not treated with the drug.
Research has shown that marijuana can lead to high brain creativity. Those who smoke
cannabis were found to be more creative in coming up with new ideas as compared to non-
users. Immediately they smoked, they were able to generate ideas, come up with new words
and lead to improved fluency. The drug makes the brain cells have a better detection of those
associations that make one to radically generate new ideas. It makes someone to have high
working brain hence perceiving things differently (Iverson, 2008).
According to a research coming from Nottingham, marijuana aids in preventing brain
damage. It is able to minimize the size of the affected area. The drug can also help in protecting
the brain from concussions and trauma.
However, despite all the health benefits marijuana has to its users, it also possesses
huge negative effects. Some of the negative effects of marijuana include:
Marijuana usually affects almost all the body parts when taken. The mode in which it
is taken to the body does not matter, whichever way the drug finds its body to the user, it tends
to interfere with almost all the vital organs of the body including liver. Marijuana also affects
the nervous system and the immune system of the user making his/her body so weak that it
cannot be in a position to fight against the disease-causing microorganism. THC normally
makes the users feel so ‘high’ such that they are able to try anything just to prove to others that
they can. They easily pick an argument, quarrel and fight over small things. Hence when it is
legalized, violence will increase in the country (Iverson, 2008).
ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 6
Marijuana can also cause increased heartbeat to the smoker three more times as
compared to a non-user. This has increased the number of people suffering from heart attack.
Research has shown that there is a linear relationship between smoking bhang and the increased
rates of heart attacks. The more one smokes marijuana the higher the chances of suffering from
heart attack. This further leads the country to lack productive workforce as many of her citizens
become less productive. The US will also be forced to import workforce from abroad an activity
which is very costly. Family members to those who suffer the heart attack will also be forced
to channel their efforts and resources to a direction they had not expected. The resources used
to take care of the sick could be used to fund other development activities such as investment
hence contributing to the growth of the country’s economy (Grinspoon, et al. 1997).
Marijuana is known cause brain damage. Research has shown that many of the
adolescents who engage in using the drug have a high chance of their brain getting damaged.
This is as a result of impairment of the brain cells making them not to function normally. When
used for a long time, it causes addiction making the user not be able to live without it. Prolonged
use also increases the chances of brain damage. The user is then not in a position to think
rationally. Several cases have been reported that those who use the drug do not have a good
social life. They are not able to keep their marriages for long hence the social structure of the
country will be interfered with.
Addiction is a major problem to those who use this drug. The users find it hard to live
without smoking. This makes them rely on means of getting money so that they can afford it
hence causing insecurity as some go to an extent of making away with people’s money.
Conclusion
Taking a close look, negative effects of the drug surpasses its use as a medicinal drug.
Therefore, the drug is not supposed to be legalized since its legalization will bring more harm
than benefits.
