Artists have various way of presenting their feelings, ideas and perception to the public.
Some of the ways are drawing and painting. What is portrayed in paint is exactly what the people
admire, feel or think about an issue that can be presented or solved in a unique way. For the
purpose of this paper, I will analyze, compare and contrast ‘Landscape at L’Estaque’ by George
Braque and ‘Checker board’ by Juan Gris.
Landscape at L’Estaque
Artist: Georges Braque
Title: Landscape at L'Estaque
Surname 2
Origin: France
Date: 1906
Medium: Oil on canvas
Inscriptions: Signed, l.l.: "G. Braque"
Dimensions: 60.3 × 72.7 cm (23 3/4 × 28 5/8 in.)
Reference Number: 1981.65
Landscape at L’Estaque was an art by George Braque (French 1882-1963) in 1906. Braque did
this art after visiting French Mediterranean Coast. He was influenced by the work of Paul
Cezanne. He used the art of Cezanne to show distorted perspectives, faceted brushwork and
colors that structured his view of a tree lined road. He was able to mix reds, yellows and oranges
to show turbulent heat. The importance of this art was to continue with the work of Cezanne in
showing the heat that harnessed the area despite the availability of trees. This art was essential in
showing the beauty of the land as well as the structures that were being made. From this art, it is
hard to be angry as the artist used bright colors which show continuity, connection and Braque’s
ability to live during Cubism period.
Surname 3
Juan Gris was a (Spanish (1887-1927) ‘The Checkerboard’
Artist: Juan Gris
Title: The Checkerboard

Dimensions: 92.1 × 73 cm (36 1/4 × 28 7/8 in.)

Juan Gris was a (Spanish (1887-1927) painter who painted ‘The Checkerboard’ in 1915. In this
art work, the viewer is able to see the unique work of Gris by dominant shapes like rectangles
and triangles. His work was important in showing how colors can be used to make people think
and do calculations in an abstract way.

Both Braque and Gris, they used colors that portrayed their uniqueness. They were able to
impress the people by their style of painting. However, the ways they are doing their painting
depict them as cubists as they wanted to revolutionalize art work during cubism period. Also,
they wanted their art to be analyzed from different point of views.
The only difference between the two art works is that Braque was impressing and wanted his
audience to feel the environment in his town while Gris wanted his audience to open up their
mind (intellectually) and come up with different ways of doing abstract things.
