ASSESSMENT OF ABDOMEN AND GENITOURINARY SYSTEM 2
Assessment of Abdomen and Genitourinary System
Amira is a 27-year old female Syrian refugee who is presented in the ER with bleeding.
Based on the scenario given, my first instinct was to think a miscarriage, but of course, no
conclusion can be made without making further evaluations. In order to gather verbal
information and assess the patient, there are many factors to be considered so that a proper
assessment can be carried out. According to Brickner (1999), a language barrier is a threat to the
quality of hospital care. As such, I would get someone to interpret the language so that any
chance of mis-communication can be eliminated.
As part of assessing and caring for Amira, my priority is to locate the source of bleeding
and look for ways of stopping it if she is still bleeding. I would mainly focus on her
genitourinary and abdominal areas in determining the origin of pain and bleeding. After
obtaining the set of essential signs, I would order STAT labs, including a BMP, CBC, PTT/PT,
toxicology screening, a pregnancy test, and check for the type and screen to determine if she
needs a transfusion of blood. I would administer 1-2L of oxygen via nasal cannula depending on
the oxygen saturation level of Amira. Besides, I would obtain an IV access, if she may require
fluids in her body. Furthermore, I would order a STAT abdominal ultrasound. I guess that she
was bleeding from either her vagina or rectum since she is experiencing abdominal pain and
being that she was found sitting in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor. On the other hand, I
would carry out an abdominal exam if she would allow me to do so and depending on the
severity of her level of pain. Jarvis (2016), gave the order and technique of performing an
abdominal exam to be inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion. In order to
communicate with Amira, I would also have to call my interpreting resource. If Amira does not
know the origin of bleeding, the examination of the abdomen will allow me to explain the need
