Reading is among the vital elements that as a student I need to have in order for me to
gain and grasp knowledge from various sources. To be able to gain the required information
from reading texts such as books, journals or articles, I must use one or more reading styles.
Three types of reading styles exist; scanning, skimming and in-depth/detailed reading style.
However, I have read some texts require change of roles at some point. The roles included
skimming while other information I had to read in detail or using the scanning reading style. For
instance, the way I will read a book or an academic journal is different from the reading style I
use when reading a magazine or a newspaper.
When reading books and academic journals, I must utilize in-depth reading while
magazines and newspapers I can either scan or skim for the intended information. For example,
when reading a newspaper I’m always interested in reading particular news such as sports. In
such instances, I have to skim by reading just the headlines of some news until I get to the news
that I need. When reading for an exam, I have to read in detail right from the start either of a
book or journal that I will be tested on. This is important because detailed reading helps me to
comprehend the required information which I will utilize later for example during an exam or a
test unlike reading magazines. Additionally, I can use scanning to read books and academic
journals when I have to obtain the exact content that I want to read about: For instance, when as
a student I want to read a particular topic because we were told in class that the test will be set
from that topic.
Reading someone else’s communication can be very challenging because of the
techniques the author of the material used. One technique that different authors use which can
hinder comprehending a certain text is vocabulary/jargon utilization. This is because; to be able

to comprehend what the author of a text is communicating I have to understand most of the
words used. Some authors use difficult words that can hinder the understanding of their text.
Another technique is reason and background knowledge; reasoning and background knowledge
helps in understanding the context and the content of the text which helps me in comprehending.
However, biases may arise in cases when as a reader I read parts of the text which can affect my
comprehension while lack of background knowledge about a certain topic may make me to
misunderstand the text.
Lastly, the author’s construction of sentences and their cohesion can also be a hindrance.
Understanding how sentences are built in a text to form a particular idea is important. However,
if I misunderstand sentences used it means that I will not comprehend the text as required: This
is because if I misunderstand the sentences I will not know how the ideas link and connect to
each other.
Reading involves commitment that requires me to be motivated in order to comprehend
information. There are various ways that I can use to improve and enhance my reading skills.
One way is taking notes while reading; this is important because it helps me to have a deeper
understanding of the text. Another strategy is reviewing, paraphrasing and summarizing what the
text is all about. This will help me to comprehend scanned or skimmed information from a text.
Skimming in a text is important because it provides me with the exact material that I want
to read and saves me time. One area in a reading text that I can skim and get information about
the text is the first paragraph. This is because when I read in detail the first paragraph of a text I
am provided with the idea of what the whole text is all about and what will be discussed in it.

Visual Text
The above visual text shows me a social phenomenon of equality and equity such that it
depicts how the society is formed according to distribution of resources. From the text I can see
that there are distance and perspective visuals. The distance and perspective visual in this case is
the people standing on items like stools that are giving them ability to watch the game that is
ongoing. On the side of equality, all people are standing on one type of stool but on the side of
equity height is considered to ensure that each of the three people see what is going on. The
subject matter focuses on ensuring that there is equal access to resources without discrimination,
for instance, on the side of equality, the disabled person is given the opportunity to watch the
game by ensuring that he is on a higher ground than the others.
The presence of color in this image attracts attention and makes sure that the image is
attractive in order for me to view it as the intended audience so that I can receive the exact
message. The bright colors in this image are used to express the tone used to communicate the
message; the colors are used to indicate a tone that is containing people being passionate with
others so as to encourage love in the society.
“Do School kill creativity?” is a title for a video that I retrieved from

t-11_must_see_ted_talks#t-67424 is a Ted Talk speech by Ken Robison in which he talks about
what schools are meant to do. According to him, he claims that school is one place where
creativity such as art is killed; this is because such subjects are seen to be unworthy compared to
subjects like engineering and medicine. Robinson in his talk is so passionate about his thoughts
that school kills creativity, he appears to be bold, sure and convinced about his thoughts
throughout the talk.
There are various cues that Robinson uses in his talk as he convinces me as one of his
audience concerning his thoughts. One of the cues he uses is questioning; this makes him to
involve the audience and capture their attention so that the message is clear. Another cue is his
body posture; throughout the talk he appears to be standing at one position with limited
movements to indicate that he is bold and has a strong stand in what he is talking about. Lastly,
he uses smiles as one of his facial expressions to ensure that his audience is attracted and
concentrates.
