READING STYLES 2

Reading is among the vital elements that as a student I need to have in order for me to
gain and grasp knowledge from various sources. To be able to gain the required information
from reading texts such as books, journals or articles, I must use one or more reading styles.
Three types of reading styles exist; scanning, skimming and in-depth/detailed reading style.
However, I have read some texts require change of roles at some point. The roles included
skimming while other information I had to read in detail or using the scanning reading style. For
instance, the way I will read a book or an academic journal is different from the reading style I
use when reading a magazine or a newspaper.
When reading books and academic journals, I must utilize in-depth reading while
magazines and newspapers I can either scan or skim for the intended information. For example,
when reading a newspaper I’m always interested in reading particular news such as sports. In
such instances, I have to skim by reading just the headlines of some news until I get to the news
that I need. When reading for an exam, I have to read in detail right from the start either of a
book or journal that I will be tested on. This is important because detailed reading helps me to
comprehend the required information which I will utilize later for example during an exam or a
test unlike reading magazines. Additionally, I can use scanning to read books and academic
journals when I have to obtain the exact content that I want to read about: For instance, when as
a student I want to read a particular topic because we were told in class that the test will be set
from that topic.
Reading someone else’s communication can be very challenging because of the
