not entitled to commercial aviation. This certificate is not so restrictive because the holder has
no right to commercial flying. Just like in First Class medical certificate, the holder must be
mentally and physically fit. The second Class license is required for the following licenses; MEP
training, IFR (A)- training and VFR-night training. This license expires after one year regardless of
age.
(3). Third Class Medical Certificate
It is a certificate that is used to exercise the freedom of a private pilot license or any
lower pilot certification level such as student, recreational or private pilot. In the US, this
certificate has to be renewed after every 60 months for people less than 40 years or after every
two years for people over 40 years.
Requirements of acquiring an Aviation Medical Certificate
(a) First Class medical certificate
1. Medical History
Medical history is the questions concerning past illnesses declared on your application
form. Body examination has to be contacted by a doctor authorized by FAA to ascertain the
history of your recent illnesses. The following are different tests conducted;
(i). Eyesight examination involves checking for distance vision, near vision, contact
lenses, eye surgery, color vision and eye functioning.
(ii). Physical Examination includes testing for ears, electrocardiogram (ECG), Lung
function test (Spirometry), haemoglobin blood test, Chest X-ray and also urine test.
