Aviation Medical Certification
Introduction
According to Title 14, Part 1 of the Code of Federal Regulations, FAA describes a medical
certificate as acceptable evidence of body fitness through a form described by the
Administrator. The main reason for the pilot medical program is to protect the pilot, air
travelers and the public.
Basing on a medical examination and evaluation of medical history, anyone who meets
Federal American Aviation flyers medical standards is entitled to a medical certificate without
any restriction other than than the stated limitation. All the people entitled to a medical
certificate must always have it at all times whenever they want to seek services for which they
are licensed. Gilders, Balloon and pilot sports certifications do not require medical certificates.
All the genuine certificates must be issued by a doctor approved by the FAA to a person with
good physical and mental health.
Types of Aviation Medical Certificates
1. First Class Medical Certificate
This certificate is used to exercising the freedom of an airline transport pilot certificate.
This license expires after one year for a pilot less than 40 years and half a year for pilots over 40
years. This certificate is a requirement for all pilots involved in commercial aviation, and it has
the most restrictive medical standards.
2. Second Class Medical Certificates
A license that is acquired by General Aviation pilots only. General aviation pilots are
those people who are registered by the pilots association, but they take flying as a hobby and a

not entitled to commercial aviation. This certificate is not so restrictive because the holder has
no right to commercial flying. Just like in First Class medical certificate, the holder must be
mentally and physically fit. The second Class license is required for the following licenses; MEP
training, IFR (A)- training and VFR-night training. This license expires after one year regardless of
age.
(3). Third Class Medical Certificate
It is a certificate that is used to exercise the freedom of a private pilot license or any
lower pilot certification level such as student, recreational or private pilot. In the US, this
certificate has to be renewed after every 60 months for people less than 40 years or after every
two years for people over 40 years.

certificate; this is because the minimum age is 16 years for a student pilot certificate.
4. Cost of acquiring medical certificate
The FAA is not mandated to set fees for medical examination and issuance of a medical
certificate, but this is the work of Aviation Medical Examiners who are allowed to charge the
applicant appropriately so long as it is not more than the standard fee. Generally, FAA does not
charge an additional fee above what the doctor charges, therefore if you are concerned about
the cost you can discuss it with the physician you are planning to see.
Application appeals for medical certification
You could be asking yourself whether you can appeal if your application for a medical
certificate is denied. The answer is YES, according to section 67.409 under CFR, all the
applicants who have been denied medical certification can appeal for the certification. You may
apply for reconsideration within 30 days after the date of denial by addressing your request to
Manager, Aerospace Medical Certification Division through the Federal Air Surgeon.
How appeal process works
An applicant whose certification application is denied is advised to file an appeal to FAA
Aerospace Medical Certification Division or RFS. The two bodies will review the application and
inform the applicant the decision they have made. IN case the two organizations fail to approve

the appeal of the applicant, the denial becomes final, and the applicant can now forward the
call to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The applicant’s appeal can also be heard by an Administrative Law judge and consider
his/her eligibility for certification. If the decision is still unacceptable to the applicant or the
FAA, the matter is appealed to the full board. In case the board confirms the denial
certification, the applicant is allowed to seek appeal by a U.S. Court of Appeals.
Fate of people with foreign medical certificate
Sometimes you could be asking yourself what you would do in case of an international
medical license, and you want to exercise pilot freedom in the United States. To be able to
enjoy these services, you must have the valid foreign license and medical certificate verified by
the Civil Aviation Authority.
Recovering a lost Medical Certificate
To obtain your misplaced medical certificate, you should submit an AC Form 8060-56 to
FAA, Aerospace Medical Certification, P.O BOX 26200, Oklahoma City. A check or money order
for $2.00 is debited to FAA accounts. After that, the AMCD will fax you a record of your
certificate that is valid for not more than two months. Two months will be enough time to
receive your replacement certificate.
