BEIN SPORTS AND THE PREMIER LEAGUE POPULARITY
Introduction
The introduction of television into the market enabled people to watch live activities that
take place all over the world with the signal of the aerial connected to the gadgets. The coming
into business of BeIN Sports has helped many football fans in the world to enjoy live matches as
they are played. The television plays a crucial role in providing people with news and sports
airing to the people. Some of the games that are aired globally facilitate the funs in keeping track
of the teams they support. Since its invention in the dawning years of the twentieth century,
many people have been keen on acquiring television sets for entertainment purposes in some
parts of the globe and prestige in other underdeveloped parts. Different broadcasting companies
have limitations of airing their content in specific regions. Therefore, even though people may
have televisions there is a myriad of restrictions especially in the Middle East (Pappé).
1
Having a
plan in the industry is a great step towards venturing a business. The BeIN Sports has done
enough study of the market and evaluated the preferences of the audience. The market study in
America, the United Kingdom, and parts of Africa gathered enough information about the people
who will subscribe to the channels and receive sports live stream on their television sets.
However, many of the respondents to the study indicated that the use of television signals is a
great idea, as it requires the antenna and the subscription fee unlike watching over the internet
that is not available in many local regions.

The Industry
Object of Analysis
This paper determines how much BeIN Sports and the English Premier League had to
pay to acquire TV rights in different regions of America. BeIN is a global sports network that
has various branches in Australia, Turkey, the United States of America, and the United
Kingdom. The premier league is an international sports competition that most people in the
world like to watch. The move made by the management of BeIN is a great idea that will earn.
This sports network has established different stations with its principal focus in Asia, America,
The Middle East, North America, and some few countries in Europe (BeIN SPORTS).
2
The
various languages that this group broadcasts in include English, Spanish, Arabic, French,
Chinese, Turkish, Thai, and Indonesian (Sanchez).
3
The acquisition of TV rights in the Middle
East has been problematic due to the existence of other digitalized television stations in the
region ("Live Soccer TV ").
4
The diversification of the airing languages is a way of gaining more
clients to the media, as it will subscribe. For example, different languages will mean that there
will be no need for the customers to stain in getting the message from the broadcasters. When the
local language is used, the majority of the people will use the service as they all understand and
it favors there language. The consideration of language indicates the evaluation of culture and
ethics the manner in which a message can be delivered in English cannot be the same way the
message can be delivered in Spanish. BeIN Sports did a feasibility study that encompasses all the
regions targeted and the ethics. However, the different locations will hire people from the same

locality to help spread the word. Language and social groups have a close relationship. A group
can be combined with labels that can include; talk or speech, as used in hick talk or surfer
speech. Such patterns were also found to be used within the region such as NorCal talk. The
most common labels that were widely used in the region were hill-billies and rednecks.
However, such labels have not been widely used among the people. In the tallying process of the
phrases used, some phrases were used that include cowboys, desert folk, white trash, farmers,
and twangy. As a new sports channel in the market, the employees will be sending signals to
people that they work for such a company and it offers the following services. The creation of
employment opportunities will make the company advertise its services and gain more customers
through hiring local individuals.
Conceptual Framework
Different scholars have been keen in analyzing the secret behind the vast penetration of
other media networks in various regions of the globe. This section comprises of the different
kinds of literature that can assist in answering the research questions of BeIN paying £5bn to
acquire TV rights. BeIN is slowly manoeuvring through several obstacles and becoming one of
America’s most trusted sports network (Hayat et al.,).
5
These authors were keen to determine
whether the rebranding of Al-Jazeera sport as BeIN in the US was due to political pressures
(Hayat et al. 795). These authors went deep to analyse the tweeter handle of this organization in
their quest to dig some information (Hayat et al.).
The authors then utilized social network analysis to assess the dispersal of information in
the selected communities. The survey established that there the tweeter followers followed the
sports network for its news and not the origin. Therefore, there was no reciprocity between the

5
political orientation and the rebranding of this sports network. This source is relevant as it assists
in answering the central research question of how BeIN acquired TV rights and is now
manoeuvring in the US despite its major association with the Middle East.
In another article authored by Samuel-Azran et al., there were many questions regarding
the rebranding of Aljazeera sports as BeIN. However, these authors focussed on assessing the
impact of sports globalization on the Middle East and North Africa countries to recover the
rights cost of £5bn and later generate profit. The authors begin by defining the history of sports
broadcasting and its consequences to fans in MENA (Samwel-Azran, Karniel, and Lavie-
Dinur).
6
AJS moved in to eliminate competition by purchasing six sporting channels of its major
rival from the Saudi network Arab Radio and Television (ART) at the US $6.4 Billion (Samwel-
Azran, Karniel, and Lavie-Dinur). After the purchase, Abu Dhabi sports channel emerged to be
the main competitor of this sports network as it had exclusive rights to German Bundesliga and
English Premier League.
7
However, in 2013, Abu Dhabi Media lost the competition over media
rights to AJS, with this station paying close to $300 million each for these rights and a right to
broadcast German Bundesliga (Samwel-Azran, Karniel, and Lavie-Dinur). This action
completely stripped off ADM its broadcasting rights. However, the rebranding of AJS will
guarantee equal viewership rights and the globalization battle between sports networks will be
determined through international regulations.

Methodology
The method used in this research was based on selective exposure and a meta-analysis.
The main news channels and websites used to obtain data regarding BeIN Sport and its
penetration in the American sports market include fansided.com, livesoccertv.com, and
BeIN.com. These sites provided credible information on the creation of this sports channel and
its rebranding but the information from class work contributed much in the development and
construction of the research. The manner of sending the signals is varied based on the rules and
regulations governing the media industry in the various target countries. BeIN Sports will need
to apply eh same method of broadcast as the existing media houses in various countries due to
the legislation procedures and policies. The kind of content banned in certain countries should
not be aired as it will be against the law and might lead to the closure of the branch n such a
country.
Findings
A major significant finding is that the use of social media enabled this sports channel to
get more viewers in not only America ("Live Soccer TV ") but also other parts of the globe
("BeIN SPORTS "). Groups posted on social media sites can pass the information about the
channels and the sports aired. The sports funs will then search for the channels and subscribe for
streaming live matches. Rebranding of Aljazeera sports to BeIN enabled it to have a global face
thereby making the network popular in most American states (Hayat et al.).
8
Finally, this
research found that the BeIN, formally known as AJS, had to eradicate competition by
purchasing most sports channels of the then sports broadcasting giant Saudi network Arab Radio

and Television (ART) (Samwel-Azran, Karniel, and Lavie-Dinur). BeIN then sealed their rights
by outdoing ADM in the purchase of the sports rights (Sanchez).
BeIN sports channel had to part with close to $300 million for each channel to acquire the
rights to broadcast English Premier League (Samwel-Azran, Karniel, and Lavie-Dinur).
9
The
funds spent were much but the prospected yields were worth the sacrifice as they were to earn
more in return after starting to broadcast. This sports Network Company also found ways of
beating its rivals before dominating MENA countries. The research also found that the BeIN
originated from Aljazeera sports before it rebranded in 2014. The channel got different forms of
criticisms because of its overpriced packages.
The answers to the main research question that was how much BeIN Sports and the
English Premier League had to pay to acquire TV rights in the Middle East. In addition, how
they have opened up in the different regions of America. The role of television in the society is
also included in this discussion. BeIN used brilliant strategies in getting TV rights in the Middle
East and opening up in America and other parts of the globe.
The Message
Primarily, object of this paper is to explore the significance of the content used by BeIN
sports and the message passed to the people. The semiotic analysis will be the primary tool that
will help to analyze the content that BeIN Sports broadcast to the audience. Therefore, the paper
explores the use of symbols and visuals that represent the events that take place among the
society. The first section describes the content and then provides its effect to the community. The
article then covers the way BeIN Sports utilizes the content and ideas in reinforcing and

emphasizing on the message to the society, more so the viewers. Finally, this article provides a
succinct summary of the relevance of the content to theory.
Ideology of Sports through BeIN Sports
The use of technology has made the media industry to be able to broadcast using
handheld devices such as tablets and android phones. BeIN Sports has created apps that can be
installed in the gadgets and help to access the site activities and watch games live via the
internet. BeIN Sports has grouped a dozen of channels. In most cases, the subscribers may have a
relatively little interest in some of the channels. A good example is the Sports Global package.
The aim of grouping the channels together is to offer the subscribers with the illusion of greater
value. For instance, Sports Global Package includes all sports package channels, 11HD to 16HD,
BeIN Sports NBA and Fox Sports (Findlay).
10
A subscriber having a particular interest in the
Fox Sports may opt to pay for this package. The inclusion of the many sports in the package
helps to allure the customer by creating the impression that the package is more valuable than
other packages. The subscriber will be forced to pay for other services in the package. The
services provided come with ads that inform subscribers of other services offered apart from
airing matches. The services include movies and other television programs that can be watched
when there is no match BeINg broadcasted. Their representation of sports in these modern forms
of media tends to accentuate behaviors that demonstrate morals and ethics that reflect the history
of sports. They also help to maintain the history of the various sports they featured in their
platform.
BeIN Sports seems to have a higher level of dedication to maintaining a commanding
position in the market. As a matter of facts, BeIN Sports appears to be unwilling to venture into
10

9
contentious situations. In addition, it has bought some sports franchises and carried out major
rebrands to ensure a forcible entry into a certain market (Dixon and Dixon).
11
For instance,
Aljazeera had to acquire some rights from Mediapro a step that enables to make BeIN Sports
influential in Spain. Some of the rebranding activities included a variation of the content they
broadcasted to meet the demands of the audience in different geographical regions. The variation
of content makes the difference from other Sports Media Channels.
12
The intention of making
variations is to meet the expectations of viewers and make improvements to the clarity of the
content broadcasted.
The disseminated message to the public by BeIN Sports helps to reinforce the values held
by the sportsmen. For example, in the North American region, people tend to worship winning in
the sports media. Therefore, the sports media must focus on the excitement generated during the
victory moments (Hoberman).
13
Responding to these values, BeIN Sports concentrates on the big
game that helps to attract the attention of the majority of the audience. The concentration is
achieved through advertisement of airing the match prior to the scheduled period to pass
information to the public on the channels that will be viewing the match. By securing the
broadcast rights for the major games in different regions has helped the BeIN Sports to promote
some cultural values in the different societies.
14
On the other hand, this media platform has
contributed to reinforcing the players who record exceptional results. For instance, BeIN Sports
has helped to feature the most outstanding players in various games through interviews and
previews of previous matches. Consequently, they have contributed to the promotion of
idolization of these players.

10
From the above analysis, BeIN Sports is a sports media that has managed to gain a good
establishment in the field of sports. This platform delivers sports related message to the audience
through the most traditional channels.
15
The message delivered is very significant in promoting
the history of sports and individual values, attitudes as well as beliefs related to the history of
sports. The design of their channels helps to create a reality of events among the audience.
16
For
instance, they group channels that offer different sports content together to create an impression
that their content is more valuable to the public. The message they pass to the public helps to
meet the demands of the people by reinforcing the values and beliefs that are common in
different regions.
The Audience
BeIN Sports is an international network of sports that is owned and managed by BeIN
Sports Media Group. BeIN Sports rides on the idea that sports is and will always be a
combination of activities with unique ability to bring people together regardless of the cultural
beliefs and differences in social status that create boundaries among individuals (Wood).
17
Thus,
BeIN Sports Media Group believes in making various sports contents available to the viewers
regardless of the place, platform of delivery and device. On the other hand, the audience
describes the great multitude of followers and subscribers to the contents that BeIN Sports offers.
This paper, therefore, focuses on establishing BeIN Sports audience in the Middle East Countries
and North Africa that make up the MENA Region. The audience is the major target of the media
as they are the customers through subscribing to the channels of BeIN Sports Media.

The Object of Analysis
The object of analysis is the audience to whom the sports contents are offered. According
to Daidj, an audience in the context of sports refers to the individuals who subscribe to the sports
related contents.
18
The audience is more of an abstract term that can be used interchangeably
with society or community to denote people identified with an interest in any form of the sports
activity. BeIN acts as a mediator between the matches played and the audience. The channel
through which the games are aired to reach the viewers screens is the most important activity that
BeIN does to its audience. For example, a closer examination of BeIN Sports reveals that the
media group refers to their audience as the target population that they have the obligation to offer
high-quality viewer sporting contents. BeIN Sports relies on the social media platforms such as
the internet to guarantee the audience live streaming of sports events as well as various local and
international television stations to air the sports, update the audience and receive their feedback.
Other social media platforms used to reach the audience are official Facebook websites and
Twitter accounts.
Conceptual Framework
The study focuses on informing the audience that BeIN Sports is available in the Middle
East, North Africa, and the MENA Region. Correspondingly, notable from the concept
summarized by the study title is that BeIN Sports is the independent supplier of the services
while the audience is the consumer of the services offered by BeIN Sports. Therefore, the
particular target audience for this study is the Middle East, North Africa, and the MENA
populace. With audience having known of the services and the regions provided, the study goes
ahead to seek answers for the demographics of the audience from the geographical regions in

12
question, the regions with massive subscriptions, and finally, the particular sports contents
offered to the identified audience.
Methodology
The required or rather the relevant data can be collected using structured or semi-
structures techniques. Both are necessary for purposes of obtaining the expected information as
well as those that shade light on the subject. The research method, in addition, takes into account
techniques such as personal interviews and observations that are used in combination for
effective and sufficient coverage (Creswell).
19
Above all, due to time constraints, qualitative
research suits the study since it has room for a smaller sample size to be used and that the
respondents are selected with the aim of fulfilling a specified quota.
The study method employed to accomplish this study tasks is qualitative research. The
method is the best alternative considering that the study seeks answers regarding social aspects
of the relations. As such, the qualitative research primarily provides an opportunity to explore the
research topic. It fits the sociological aspects of this study whereby it can be used to foster an
understanding of various possible underlying rationales behind the study, opinions, as well as
motivations. The research method is furthermore useful in providing insights into certainly
probable problems through reasoned ideas that lead to the development of hypotheses. The
hypothesis nonetheless have the opportunities of triggering qualitative research for further
research if need be.
The participants were adults (aged 18 years and above) and of sound mind. This provided
opinions that set guidelines regarding ethical concerns that demand of the researcher to involve

only respondents with the ability to make rational responses and judgments (Oliver).
20
Six
respondents were then approached and informed of the study aims. Two of the respondents from
the Middle East were reached via electronic mails, the other two from the Mena region were
reached through direct contact, and the last two from North Africa were reached through direct
messages sent to twitter accounts. Upon their consents to participate because of no name
disclosure the study interviews were conducted through a voice over internet protocol (Skype)
for purposes of time conveniences and geographical barriers and the participants referred to as
respondent 1, 2, 3, through to 6.
Findings
BeIN Sports have a great number of audiences from the Middle East who are loyal
subscribers among the three regions considered for the study. Information collected from the two
respondents from the Middle East revealed that approximately 30% of the region's populace is
made up of persons aged 15-29 years, Analysis of the population as obtained from related
secondary sources ascertained the information whereby it is that age range that comprises the
Middle East Millennia’s. Such an audience accounts for over 100 million of the total population,
BeIN sports has taken advantage of such massive audience and has provided them with live
streaming sports contents such as rugby and football that interests them.
The respondents of North of Africa brought to the study’s attention that many Africans
were attracted to BeIN Sports services because it offered to them satellite systems that were fully
installed and required no internet connections. Through such systems, the audience is able to
access their respective contents provided by the company including live football events, movies,

14
and entertainments. Nevertheless, respondents opinions that because many North Africans are
heavy users and consumer of internet products and services, they found using BeIN Sports more
advantageous since its services were accessible and available on handheld devices.
The Use of Technology in Airing the Matches
Digital innovations are being made and organizations adopt much. Handling many
computer components becomes a hustle for many organizations that have limited premise space.
In eliminating the problem, virtualization of the computer components is done and the security of
the devices together with the files stored is assured. BeIN Sports will require the virtualization of
its servers to avoid miscommunications and help in channeling the right program to the audience.
BeIN Sports managers will need computer virtualization given the benefits of using virtual
computers in the IT era. Management and access to information, when stored on virtual facilities,
makes it easier for the management and staff to handle tasks. For example, the CEO of BeIN
Sports will not need to travel all the regions to make investigations and check on the
performance of employees. The use us login details that can grant the official permission to
monitor and check on the work performance and progress will make the work easier. Apart from
completing tasks, solving customer related issues does not require a worker to be in the office to
solve, however, what can be required is the availability of the internet to gain access to the cloud
storage databases.
Virtualization of BeIN Sports Computers in the Regions of Operation
Virtualization of computers is the creation of virtual computer components that help in
performing tasks that the real computers perform. The virtual components include storage
devices, computer hardware platforms, networking facilities, and operating systems. The
components serve the same purposes that the real components perform. The major difference is
that the virtual facilities are created in space, and they cannot be seen but discovered during the
15
execution of commands put into the computer. Hence, BeIN Sports employees based either in
America United Kingdom, and Africa can be allowed to execute commands using the set
programs that offer directions. Despite the ability to create virtual software facilities that work
the same way the real computer components work, the physical infrastructure is not eliminated
because there has to be a link between the dedicated resources of the powers of cloud computing.
Unlike having one task done from a single server, using virtual services enables multiple
operations and applications to run at the same time due to more than one user having access to
the infrastructure simultaneously. According to Mike Adams, "Virtualization software makes it
possible to run multiple operating systems and multiple applications on the same server at the
same time, It enables businesses to reduce IT costs while increasing the efficiency, utilization
and flexibility of their existing computer hardware." Virtualization is the manipulation of the
hardware operations while cloud computing is the result of the manipulation of the operations of
the hardware services (Cafaro, & Aloisio).
21
The use of virtual computers will limit the space
occupied by BeIN Sports staff on premises and help the management in communication as they
can get access to the reports or updates made to the operations of airing the matches and other
programs. With the use of the latest technology in the market, the BeIN Sports management can
hold meetings via online platforms such as Skype. The technology enables a smooth flow of
operations in organizations and helps to be effective and efficient.
Conclusion
BeIN Sports has a ready market to air its sports news and matches. However, the task is
to advertise and encourage more subscribers to the media group and help to generate and recover
the expenses incurred and make profit. For instance, BeIN Sports spent over £5bn in the
acquisition of signal rights to air the matches. Such a huge amount on the investment must be

recovered within the shortest time possible. However, the management of BeIN Sports made a
great move in studying the audience and determining the message they wanted to be sent. The
study done helped to gather people’s opinions and make use of them regarding the kind of
services BeIN Sports will provide to the audience.
