return provide food to sustain people and animals. Trees are also raw materials for various
products such as books and furniture. It goes without saying that biodiversity not only satisfies
human beings’ basic needs, but it also provides luxury.
In addition to the satisfaction of human needs, biodiversity helps in stabilizing an
ecosystem. Seed dispersal, pollination, reusing and storage of nutrients, water purification, and
climate regulation among others are services provided by ecosystems. Without these services, an
ecosystem cannot sustain itself, thus leading to extinction. This is yet another reason why I care
about biodiversity.

Research into animal, gene, and plant biology has resulted in medical breakthroughs that
have provided the cure for diseases and elongated life spans; hence, preventing the loss of lives
(Christie et al. 67). It is sad that the extinction of any species causes a loss of genetic diversity,
which decreases the possibility of discovering a new drug or vaccine. The above sentiments
show the first importance of biodiversity. Not to mention, biodiversity helps species keep off
diseases and assists them adapt easily to any alterations in their environments. In the event that
natural disasters such as fires and floods occur, biodiversity enables ecosystems to adjust
accordingly.
Naturally, the number of living beings is regulated by biodiversity. A good example is a
forest. Specifically, herbivores such as zebras and buffaloes that increase by reproduction,
carnivores feed on zebras and buffaloes, which if not killed, will augment rapidly. Consequently,
the variation of carnivores and herbivores limits wild animal population, and this demonstrates
another importance of biodiversity.
