Benefits and Drawbacks of being a Twin
In most cases, humans bear one child at a time. However, it is not abnormal for a person
to give birth to twins. The perception of this natural phenomenon differs across cultures. In some
societies, the birth of twins is a blessing to the family. However, some tribes are of the opinion
that twins bring bad luck to the community (Cooney, 2016). Despite these cultural
dissimilarities, it is evident that this unique aspect captures the public's attention. People are
often curious about the psychological connection between twins. As a way of expounding on this
subject matter, this essay will highlight some of the desirable and undesirable occurrences
experienced by identical siblings. Being a twin has certain benefits and drawbacks.
One of the advantages of being a twin is the fun that these siblings get from playing tricks
on people. Identical twins often exhibit these acts. It is common for one of the siblings to pose as
his or her identical brother or sister in different scenarios (Kerfante, 2016). They may play such
tricks on their teachers, public authorities, or friends. Although these behaviors may land them in
trouble with their seniors, it is an entertaining habit that makes it exciting to have a twin brother
or sister. From this point of view, being a twin is an interesting phenomenon in one's life.
Companionship is also a significant benefit of being a twin. Love is a normal feeling
among siblings. However, the bond between twins appears to be special (Kerfante, 2016).
Biological and environmental factors are relevant in substantiating this assertion. The firm bond
between twins is largely because of the shared DNA. The connection intensifies with age. This
bond is because twins tend to spend a lot of time together during their initial years. Young twins
engage in similar social activities. They regularly interact within and outside the family setting.
In fact, such siblings get lonely when they are away from their twin brother or sister (Cooney,

2016). In addition to the biological bond between twins, there exists a unique and profound
friendship in this relationship.
Despite the evident benefits of being a twin, there are certain drawbacks associated with
this biological phenomenon. One of the challenges experienced by twins is identity crisis
(Kerfante, 2016). Since birth, twins appear to be "one person in two bodies." Most individuals
are of the opinion that twins have the same way of thinking. They believe that such siblings have
similar interests, preferences, personalities, and goals. In fact, some people find it abnormal for
twins to engage in different activities or have separate friends (Cooney, 2016). These
misinformed perceptions cause an identity crisis in twins; especially during their teenage years.
Adolescents strive to acquire a unique identity by developing their character and identifying their
interests. It's hard for twins to achieve this goal in an environment where people continuously
compare them to their twin brother or sister (Cooney, 2016). Subsequently, most twins
experience an identity crisis during their formative years.
Despite the differing opinions on twins in different cultures, this phenomenon captures
people's attention. It is interesting to watch twins' behaviors within and outside the family
setting. Notably, there are some positive and negative aspects associated with being a twin.
These siblings benefit from having a trusted companion and having an exciting life that involves
playing subtle tricks on people. However, most twins experience an identity crisis.
