The Case of Mark Family
Breda Mary is 15-year-old, white, Caucasian and female from the Los Angles town in California.
They live in a home where the neighboring home is just a walking distance. She is in 12
th
grade
and her very bright student. Also, she is an active participant in co-curriculum activities more so
she likes basketball. Breda plans to go to college and major in psychology. Also, she is a member
of the school council team. She had reported not attending school for the last few days.
Breda has no criminal record and no medical record in her history. Currently, Breda had no
dating anyone since she broke with her boyfriend a few months ago. She does not take any
alcohols as she said at the time we met but she admitted that once or twice she has taken alcohol
only on the party when she met with her friends.
Breda’s parents, Mark the father is a back American man, aged 33-years-old and her mother
Mary is an African/American woman aged 30-years-old. She has two siblings James age 10-
years-old and Jane aged 6-years-old. Her brother James is in the 6
th
grade in the same school
with Breda. Her father Mark works in the wood curving industry where he spends most of his
time. Her mother Mary works with an organization that promotes peace in worldwide so she is
out of the country most of the times. In her home, also they live with her under, brother to her
mother Morris who is 21-years old.
Breda came to see me at the Rape Counseling center (RCC) at school for the service after she
sexually harassed in two week ago at her home by her cousin. She cited to me that she thought
she handle self since she thought it would be more embarrassing if her friends know. The reason
she came to see me she said that from that moment, she has experienced a number of emotional
behaviors that she could no longer bear. To be more precious, she could not sleep due to stress
and she has stopped all connections with her friends. She felt sad whenever anyone talked to her,
and most of the times it ended up using abusive language to all the people. Though she could
explain better but I discovered that she had a recurrent nervousness attack that disturbed her.
Unfortunately, Breda went to hospital four a week after the incident and here is where she
learned about the Rape Counseling center. At the hospital, the Rape kit was completed and tested
for HIV. Fortunately, she was HIV-negative. At that moment the doctor contacted me for helping
Breda with support and resources through the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). I help her
through her medication test and we shared a bit of her information. She said, though her life
seemed to be a blur, always when she saw her youngest brother she felt loved since though he is
a kind whenever he saw her lonely she could come and make fun to her. Her second-born
brother, James like playing games so most of the times he is busy thus has never noticed his
sister’s condition. Her father comes home late at night and leaves early in the morning so she had
not yet noticed as she said. She also noted that from the instance her mother only came home
once, she seemed in early so she was unable to openly tell her since most of the time her cousin
was with them and she feared him (Boss et al.,2008).
From the hospital, I took her directly to my office where I oriented her about our services. The
most important was to help her understand this was to create a conducive environment for her to

share her story. We arranged to meet at the next day and she came. On the meeting, we shared a
lot about her and her family. She reviled to me that she was a good student and she would like to
go back to school to complete her studies. The only fear was, she never wanted her classmate to
discover what happened to her. I told her that I would contact her professor and tell her she will
back to classes. I also told her that I will advocate for an extension of time for her assignment
since she was undergoing guidance and counseling section.
Most of the times, Breda thanked me as she felt that I was the only solution in her life. She said
to me that she was feeling safe and loved whenever I met her. I took this advantage to help her
regain her self-esteem and understand that it was not her mistake neither her parent’s mistake has
she had started hating them. Also, I aimed at making her realize that is important to be open to
her parent. She narrated to me the instance; it was on Friday she came home from school at
evening as it was normal, her brothers were not at home. As they were at the sitting room, her
cousin told her that it was his birthday and that he wanted to cerebrate with her. He had bought a
birthday cake and a whiskey. She had no reason to deny since she thought that he had no bad
intention to her. They ate the cake, after which she was forced by her cousin to take the whiskey,
after she was drunk her cousin removed her cloths and forced her to have sex. He warned her
that if she shared the information with anyone he would kill her.
During the section, Breda openly shared her in-depth life with me. She explained to me why she
had a boyfriend whom they were sexually active at her early age of 13-years-old. And why she
felt unsafe to be openly to her father. At her early ages, when her mother comes from work, she
used to come with several brands of alcohol. When they went upstairs to sleep with her brother,
her mother and father used to be left in the sitting room and when she asked they told her that it
was their time to do adult s. At school, as she was chatting with her friends, one of them
mentioned the term ‘adult s’. She was more concerned to know more, her friend told her that the
‘adult s’ are done when peoples her naked. Then she decided to confirm it from her parents. One
of the nights, she decided to go downstairs and check what was happening. She found them
naked smoking pipe. Lucky they did not notice her has she was hiding. After they finished
smoking pipe, they started having sex, at that moment, she called her mother, and she noticed
that her father and mother felt much embarrassed. Her mother commanded her to go back to her
room and never ever came downstairs at night without notifying them. The life continued well
until when she was at 13-years-old. At this time she had heard more about sex and as they
discussed with her friends. At this time she met Dan, he was 16-years old. They started dating
and having sex with her. When her parents noticed, they were so upset with her and they cut her
relationship with Dan forcefully. Her cousin was brought to her home so as to be security for her
when her parents were not there. The act made her so angry and she cut match sharing with her
parents. Because of this, she thought that her parents would not believe her even if she had told
them what happened to her. Also, she openly told me that in her culture they believed that the
girl was to be blamed at such instance. We discussed it and made her realize their believe was
wrong.
We set goals together, Breda wanted to rebuild her self-esteem again and do away with her
depression. Also, she wanted to build a good relationship with her parents and realize the
mistake they made to her. Moreover, she thought this will help her parents build parental care to

her and her siblings. During our counseling section, Breda complained that she was much
depressed such that she was thinking she was going to die. I provided her some education about
the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) where she concurred that she was undergoing most
of the symptoms as they were presented in the workbook. I advised her to use breathing exercise
whenever she was feeling nervous. She said that it was working and I told her to keep on
practicing. Also, as I told her that it was important to let her parents know. She agreed and she
made an arrangement with them at my office. When her parents came, I explained to them what
happened and they felt so apologetic to their daughter. Since it was a police case they said that
they would get justices for her daughter by getting the suspect to police. Also, they explained
why they had to cut her relationship with her boyfriend who she later understood and also
apologized to them (Melchert, 2015).
Also, since I noticed that Breda had lost her self-worth, I helped her during the section to rebuild
it using the cognitive-behavioral method. The method helped her realize who she was, and also
how importance her life was. I explained to her that what happened was beyond her control and
she would have told her parents so as to be solved early. She understood everything and regained
her self-worth, resumed her classes, and build a good relationship with her parents. Her cousin
was imprisoned for the act which made Breda agreed that justices had been done to her
(Plummer, 2014).

PART B
1. Challenges faced by client.
The challenges faced by the client were sexual assault. It made her depressed which build
mental to her.
2. How social environment affected the client.
The belief that sex was an adult thing and they should not share the topic with kid is the

members cannot do bad things to the other family member let my client not be openly to
her parent after the incident.
3. Human behavior or social theories may guide your practice with this individual and
explain how these theories inform your assessment.
Cognitive behavioral theory was the theory that helped my client to understand that she
should not blame herself for what happened. Also, I used empowerment theory to help
me in my section of guidance. We agreed on the goals to achieve we really achieved
mostly during the section.
4. Explain how you would use this assessment to develop mutually agreed-upon goals to be
met in order to address the presenting issue and challenges face by the client.

The identified strength of Breda is that she was missing her brother so I used it to rejoin
her with her family. Also, she hates one of her pimp, which enabled me to explain on
how she could cut her relationship with Mark. Mark action of introducing her to other
pimp for cash was the other strength that helped me made Breda leave him.
6. Explain how you would use evidence-based practice when working with this client and
recommend specific intervention strategies (skills, knowledge, etc.) to address the
