Part One
The chilly season had come to an end, but the effects of the winter on Jefe had become
destructive to his morale and his being. Jefe's is a vegetable now, and it is worse now as Jefe
appears to possess a human sense of time. It is virtually impossible to remember the happy times
when Jefe ran outside the house and allowed the sun to kiss his forehead when his hair bounced
over and over as he ran and played. Jefe was not always like that, he was the most energetic
being, but after the incident, the Macht family house seemed chilly and haunted. Prior the
Incident, Mona an only child of the Macht's played with Jefe, and on the day of the incident,
Mona was running on the front yard facing the street while Mrs. Macht watched Melrose place,
so it was impossible for her to follow on the activities outside the house. The importance of Jefe
in the family is difficult because he acted as a playmate and baby sitter for the family even for
some occasions when Mrs. Went on her regular grocery shopping. At the time of the incident,
Mona was seven years old, and she had the most amazing blue eyes and the kindest heart.
During the playing activity, Jefe suddenly became erratic and started barking at the top of
his lungs after a male had scooped Mona and screamingly drove off in a black SUV. Mrs. Macht
heard the Jefe loud barking and jumped out her seat to see what the problem is. Once outside,
Jefe ran to the Mrs. panting as he circled her feet. To her dismay, Mona's bicycle was partly on
the sidewalk and the street legs up, still wheeling. It was at that moment she broke a scream and
began calling her daughter's name, Mona! Mona! Mona! After half an hour she became frantic as
the front yard filled with homemakers. Soon after, Mrs. Macht housewife friends called the 911
while the other housewives from the same street. Mrs. Macht was not in the family home at the
Butterfly 3
time and Mrs. Macht, but as the other housewives call her, Liza became uncontrollable and
frantic before long.
Part Two
Once law enforcement arrived, so much changed, the house became frenzied; Jefe
crouched on the front porch, and one officer dragged him away from the door as quickly as
though Jefe was a rag doll. Mr. Joe the detective assigned to the case arrived at the scene with
two other individuals probably Joe's team. Once everyone dispersed, and the house became a
crime scene, Joe sat Liza down, poured her a glass of fancy cucumber water resting on the
mahogany dining table. It was then that Joe began to ask questions on the incident.
Joe: At what point did you realize your daughter was missing?
Liza: I was watching a repeat of Melrose place which starts at 3 PM, but once I heard
Jefe barking I quickly got out of the house.
Joe: How often do you watch the episode while your daughter plays outside?
Liza: Everyday! [Crying into an already wet handkerchief]
Joe: Have you installed security cameras in the house?
Liza: Yes, all cameras are installed and show all parts of the house. I can show you
where they all are.
The officers went into a room at the centre of the house which included a high-class
technology security system. One of Joe's team members named Packy remarked "wow! All these
hardware!" but seeing he was a little insensitive, he apologized lightly. The security cameras
showed a sleek SUV that drove up the street. Also, there were three individuals inside the vehicle
and a drive, but they all wore low caps, so it was impossible to identify any of them. As well, the
man who grabbed Mona had a masked face, was slender, 5’7 and a size 12 feet male weighing
Butterfly 4
170 pounds give or take. All the other individuals stayed in the vehicle and because there were
no restrictions to the community gate they just passed without any issue. All the suburban
cameras did not offer any quality information, but it only gave details on the SUV identification
number. Once the detectives finished compiling all the info, Mr. Macht was parking his vehicle
in the driveway, and because Liza had called him, he quickly got out of the car as soon as his car
was in the garage. At the time, the law enforcement did not ask Mr. Macht any questions
because he was not in the household around the time of the incident.
Part 3
Once the detectives left the house, both Liza and her husband paced the house and later
came out of the house to look for Mona at all possible locations she could be. The Macht’s drove
all night with no luck of their butterfly. Coming back into the house was like entering the home
of a dying man. The usual noise in the house had turned into a loud silence one that could cut
someone into two. Liza could not sleep, and she went into Mona's room and sobbed all night
quietly. Liza had the worst feeling about the parting, and she did not know when or if she would
see her daughter again. From the front door, one could hear a drop of water from the kitchen
faucet as it dropped into the sink. At five am, there was a soft hooting from the master bedroom
and as Macht looked outside a car drove, and Macht hurriedly looked hoping that it was a Good
Samaritan dropping off Mona. Immediately after, the house phone rang, and due to the shock and
interruption from the loud silence, both Liza and Macht shivered rushed to receive the call.
Macht: Hello,
Voice Receiver: If you want your daughter back you must follow the instructions on
we.com and if you involve the authorities your daughter dies!
Butterfly 5
Macht: [sobbing] Let me talk to my daughter [the line went dead before he could finish
the last word].
Retrieving their laptop, the husband typed in the address in the browser and looked at the
message on the front page of the website. The message read "we asked you to help us so now
you must help us build the project or the butterfly is gone! Be at the front of First Bank
international at 17:00 hours." It was nerve-wracking, and Liza almost fainted from despair and
sadness. The message also read "Once at the Bank also ensure that you look into the website for
further details." So, among themselves, both parents sat on the floor wondering and confused. It
was not confusing to Macht a leading nuclear physicist and his research on leading government
research was impeccable, but his Liza was not familiar with his work and only thought of his
husband as a scientist. On many occasions, Liza affirmed to people that he was a Rocket scientist
and, Macht just smirked. Liza only understood his husband's work as a government job, but she
did not anticipate all the problems Macht’s research could cause. Meanwhile, Jefe was frantically
running up and down barking and smelling the front lawn, but neither Liza nor Macht understood
what Jefe was trying to say. At 14:00 hours Liza and Macht parted albeit unwillingly and Macht
began his drive to the city so that he would be at First Bank by 17:00 hours.
Part Four
In the police department, Joe the case detective and his team went into his office to
brainstorm on ideas on the family and who might have kidnapped the little Mona. All team
members agreed that professionals conducted the kidnap in the way they held themselves
throughout the incident. The SUV plate numbers as the investigations found were from a hired
car, and the name used in employing the vehicle was not in any police records. Also, the
detectives noted that the hire was paid in cash, so the lead was not helpful. However, a junior
Butterfly 6
detective noted that Macht Odell JR. was a significant government top shot nuclear physicist. It
was at this point Joe decided to check into the family’s security system again which was easy
because the family had already given them access to their records. Packy also looked into their
browsing history and encountered the we.com website address that had been utilized that
morning to find the message. The lead was significant because it could lead them to the
kidnappers without the Macht's finding out because they had could follow Macht to where he
was through his mobile device GPS. At 1700 hours Macht was the First Bank International, and
so he looked into his phone to find the next procedure step to release his butterfly. There were so
many faces pacing up and down the street at the bank, and it now seemed that everyone was
staring at him and for a moment Macht thought they looked like strange lamps in the flickering
light. He sat on a bank bench and repeatedly refreshed his mobile browser to get the next
instructions and his mobile phone now seemed like a blood-stained silvery knife.
At exactly 17: 45 Macht received an instruction to enter into an Arabian restaurant which
was across the street which as he approached he smelled amazing aromas of the food served in
the eatery. Once he entered into the restaurant, a man in his late twenties approached him and
guided him into the back of the restaurant where he was quickly asked to wear an Islam
traditional wear consisting of a Thobe along with a Ghutra and Egal which made Macht look
unrecognizable. Moments later they went out through the front door, entered into a car and drove
off. At the same moment, the police were entering the eatery, and the detectives entered into the
eatery by following the phone's GPS and found the phone in the eatery’s bathroom, but the Man
Macht was not a place in sight. At that moment it seemed like Macht was Gandalf, and so the
police detectives began calling for backup and immediately secured the restaurant as a scene of
the crime. It was impossible to trace the communication between the kidnappers and Macht.

Part Five
Jefe looked as if he had taken a cup of coffee or an energizer drink because he became
anxious as he continuously paced the street smelling the lawns and Liza did not know why. At
this point, Liza was a walking zombie because she did not understand what to do because her not
only was her daughter missing but her husband's phone was now unavailable. She did not know
what to do so she resorted to follow Jefe around as if he was the only solution to the current
problem. Jefe paced so many times, and once they came back to the family house after walking
up and down the street, Jefe seemed to direct his mind to a particular spot, and when Liza leaned
in, he found a mobile device that contained only one number in it. Once Liza dialed the figure, a
social services number picked up and inquired what help she wanted. Immediately her instincts
affirmed to her to examine if there was a girl named Mona because she had been missing since
the day before. Before long, Liza drove to the federal facility to find Mona playing with other
children with no care in the world. Once Liza and Jefe arrived she called out to Mona while
crying and Mona happily hugged her telling her that the men who took her told her that she was
mummy and daddy would bring her a horse and she waited here since the gift was very far away.
Macht’s kidnappers had hacked into the federal institution’s security feed to show evidence of
Mona’s safety, and when watching the reunion was bittersweet. For Macht, that is all that
mattered for now. As the plane took off, someone he did not expect approached him in his seat
and that shook Macht to his core. For Jefe, the evidence of love for Mona was evident in his wet
kisses, his paces, and barks. He is the epitome of human companionship, and it is as though he
was almost as sorry about the incident as Mona's parents. It seemed so long ago when that
happened, and Liza still expects Macht to walk through the front door but the detectives already
committed Macht as a cold case.

Commentary
The creative work is a narrative in the third person perspective as the narrator describes
the characters and what happened. In this case, the reader only gets a view from the narrator. As
a T.V addict and a ferocious reader my influences are varied and not singular, and thus all
spectrums including documentaries have influenced my writing. However, I had various
challenges with the timeline because I wanted to create more flashbacks without confusing the
reader, but that is an area I must work and focus on in future. During the drafting process, Jefe
played a central part of the story, but while redrafting, I created a more varied character list to
enhance the story so that it becomes a more prominent work as opposed to a short story. As well,
the setting at the drafting process was only in the Macht family home, but I had to draft and
enhance the environment, and location to expand my originality. As a reader of many genres, I
can say that Foer Jonathan Safran's Eating animals have significantly impacted this writing and
how much the family dog has influenced their daily lives. Another essential reading that has
shaped the role of Jefe is Cohen Carl's case for the use of animals in biomedical research. As
well, the influences and opinions of how the dog is an excellent addition to my forces. I not only
consult with primary sources but I also get important influences from notable blogs on animal
rights and that has been fundamental in creating a part of Jefe where he is also a being. My peers
have encouraged and enhanced my writing skills through objective criticism and essential
methods to increase my reading. The creative aspect of this novel began as a draft takes
Burroway’s form of text, revising and reading. Burroway also influences the writing process as
she demonstrates that it is essential to show and say so as demonstrating seeing and believing so
that we can use characteristics to persons to help locate suspects in a crowd (65).

I have attained various objectives with this writing including using literary devices to
augment my creative writing by using symbolism and irony and utilizing a theme effectively.
Also, I have learned to use commas effectively throughout my essays especially by not splitting
once sentence in two. According to Strunk, it is important to avoid breaking sentences into two
that are using periods instead of commas in sentences (2011, 6). Some of my essential objectives
at the beginning included utilizing these devices, and I have realized that as a writer, writing is
not inborn instead scripts are enhanced through everyday practice and achieved using basic
English rules. Indeed, I understand that I must improve my English skills by reading widely and
obtaining criticism and encouragement from both my peers and my tutors. As I seek to amass
intelligent writing, I must focus on enhancing my English skills which at the moment have
improved but still need to reach my dreams which is becoming a successful screenwriter.
This work is part of a larger work because it ended in suspense. The reader will be
interested to know what happens to Macht and what the effects of the loss it does to the family.
Thus, the short story is part of a larger selection of short stories connected to the original stories.
It expands as the Detectives understand what happens to the Macht family and how it impacts on
the nation’s security. As I have already learned to use the art of narration which Leith notes as
the ability to levelly and reasonably set out the area of argument my next step is to master the art
of peroration that is when my narratives flourish by driving up the best conclusions and
reiterating the most persuasive points and most importantly to learn the practice of Exordium
(2011, 86).
