Since the turn of the century, today's society is significantly different from what it used

to be. Technology advancement has become a primal part of the human life hence, acutely

changing the way people head their lives. Dating in the contemporary world is definitely not

what it used to be decades back. There are two main types of dating, traditional dating and online

dating. Albeit the fact that traditional dating still exists, many people are currently engaging in

"online dating". With the busy schedules and overreliance on the internet and technology, there

is a higher likelihood that online dating might replace real-life person dating.

Online dating is a new concept that has robustly taken ground due to the technological

advances in the modern society. Regarding this form of dating, people are able to join the

overabundance dating sites by simply login into their personal computers or phones (Blackhart et

al, 115). The widely recognized online dating sites include E-harmony, Okcupid.com, Christian

mingle, and match.com. The process of joining these sites is simple as it only requires an entrant

creating a profile that comprises of personal description, hobbies, qualities of interest in a mate,

and other chemistry attribute tests (117).

Upon the completion of joining a site, the entrant is able to peruse through the profiles of

others, after which he or she starts getting regular emails of prospective matches. These websites

are designed in a way that members can chat, message, email or even video chat with probable

matches of their choice. After getting to know each other and starting a communication, the

involved parties can explore the nature of their relationship at a more personal level including,

their partner’s likes, needs, wants, objectives, and goals in life (Bryant, Katherine, and Pavica

12). To this end, the two can decide whether they want to further their relationship after which

they can choose to send pictures of each other or even set up a meeting and go out on a real date.

Diametrically, real-life dating is not as easy as online dating as it requires the prospective

partners to dress up and attend social gatherings and events including clubs, bars, and churches.

This type of dating can also stem from ‘blind dates' that could be staged by family or friends

intending to play the ‘matchmaker’ role (Bryan et al. 16). Whichever the way, real life dating

takes effect, it is stressful, time-consuming and at times lead to rejections and disappointment.

Despite both the options being acceptable in the contemporary society, many people

consider convenience, time and guarding of their hearts against heartbreaks. With online dating,

everything can be done in the comfort of a partner’s home through the phone or computer

without necessarily going around social gathering to spot a perfect match (McKie et al. 18). In

this arrangement, the parties get to understand each other adeptly through sharing of likes and

dislike before committing to each other.

Considering the busy lifestyles, family and careers pursued by many people, Online

dating has made it a lot easier to meet people of all walks of life by a simple search and tap at the

comfort of one’s home or office. Furthermore, this form has given people opportunities to meet

individuals they would not have otherwise met. Therefore, due to spatial distances and busy

schedules that people are heading in the contemporary world, online dating will gradually

replace the real-life person dating.
