Case Analysis 3 (PLG1)
Summary: Development of airmail and cargo service before World War II
The first powered flight in the world was developed year before the commencement of
the World War I. However, during the time of development the advancement of aviation
occurred at significantly slow pace with its increase in the speed becoming evident during the
war. The period between WWI and WWII saw the emergence of numerous advancements in
aviation (Donatelli, 2011). The transformation saw the shift from using wood in making aircraft
to the use of metal in making seemingly sleek, sophisticated, and fast aircraft.
Problem
Immediately after the WWI, the public faced the challenge of discerning some of the
benefits of the aviation and its consideration as rather new idea raised many questions regarding
its guarantee on the safety of the public. The investors thus exhibited fear of investing in airline
thus forcing the European governments to bear the responsibility of funding the aviation
industry. The airmail was regarded experimental and was thus financed by the government.
Significance of the problem
Before the WWI, the use of the airplanes remained limited with a few instances of its use
being in the transportation of small items that included mail, tobacco, newspapers, lamps and the
tobacco products. During the WWI, the effectiveness of the airplanes became evident hence the
decision by the various governments on improving the aviation sector. The airplanes facilitated
faster transportation of both the people and goods.
