A Case Study about the Sears Holdings
Introduction
Founded in 1889 by Warren Sears and Curtis Roebuck, Sears Holdings is a large
department store chain that has had a long history of great performance and significant growth.
In almost the whole of the 20
th
century, the company remained the largest retail store in the US
until the record was surpassed by Walmart in 1989. In the last few years, however, the company
has had a poor performance, with continually falling profits and a reducing customer base. For
instance, the company reported a net loss of $6.99 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2016,
which represented an increase in loss from $4.26 reported in the preceding quarter (Sears
Holdings 1). This was after a trend of an increasing net loss in the preceding five quarters. Below
are some marketing ideas that may help to lift the company’s performance.
Innovation
In order to compete effectively with other chain stores in its level, Sears needs innovation
that will make it outstanding in the market. A good innovative strategy would be to diversify its
product line to include more services. In the current market of chain stores, most of the large
companies that compete with Sears operate more in the goods market and less in the service

market. Therefore, venturing in the service market would be helpful to the company as it would
help it face less competition.
The company can start by retailing services that rhyme with the goods it sells. For
instance, the company can offer services such as repair of home appliances and electronics so
that those who buy appliances and electronics from them can still go for these services. Other
services they can start offering include: construction, painting, automobile assembly, garden
preparation, and lawn mowing to rhyme with their goods including: construction tools and
materials, paint, automobile, garden tools and equipment, and lawn mowers. By offering such
services, customers will have more faith in the company’s goods as they will see the company as
being conversant with the goods.
Product
Apart from diversifying the product-line to include more services, Sears needs to brand
its products to be unique in the market. The company can do this by introducing a strong mark
on its products such that every buyer notes that the products are not from any other company, but
Sears. For instance, the company can introduce a permanent logo on its products and advertise it
in the media to ensure that it is widely recognized. Such a permanent log needs to be an
identifiable mark on the goods such that each customer seeing a good from the company will be
able to identify it with the company. Such a mark would help in creating good customer loyalty
for the company as people would like to identify themselves with the mark. Essentially, the
would act as a mark of quality.

Place
For the place, Sears needs to improve how customers access its goods. Considering that
the growth of the internet and technology has made people to prefer buying from home rather
than going to the market, the company needs to introduce online stores where clients buy online
and goods are delivered to them. Such stores can only perform well if the company utilizes as
many online payment methods as possible in order to capture clients with different modes of
payments. Therefore, the company needs to partner with as many companies offering online
money transfers as possible, such as Skrill, Paypal, credit card, debit cards, wire transfer,
Payoneer, western union, among others. Such an online market will help the company expand its
market not only in the US, but also in other parts of the world where people have access to such
payment methods.
Promotion
Because Sears has literary fallen, it needs a promotion strategy that will present it as a
new company that has come with completely new ways of operation. Rather than advertising its
current strengths, Sears Holdings needs to come up with new strengths and make them known to
the public through advertisements. It can start with something small such as a distinct way of
serving customers in a better manner to ensure that they are satisfied. Presenting such strength
will be better than just presenting what it has been presenting as it will help the public to view
the company as revived. Also, because the company is making loses at the moment and may not
be able to fund costly promotion activities, it can focus on cheap ones such as social media
advertising, customer service improvements, among others. With time, the company can
introduce more expensive advertisements.

Price
Under price, the company can price its goods and services low where possible in order to
focus on gaining back its market share rather than making higher profits from unit sales. In its
current state, the company needs a larger customer base than it requires more profit per sales
volume. Therefore, a pricing strategy that targets expanding the market share is better. Another
good marketing strategy the company can put forward is price discrimination, where varies the
price of its products with the target population. The company can sell its products in poor areas
at lower prices and sell the same products at higher prices in prime areas in order to get market
share in both regions.
