A great number of the people today regard television as brainwashing and mind numbing

baloney. However, looking at some of the reality TV programs, one might concur. On contrary,

there are assortments of decent, high quality informational and quality entertainment TV

programs that are useful to excite, inform and educate families and individuals. In addition, there

are assortments of good quality programs all round the clock especially owing to the availability

of primary cable options. Television has altered the way Americans live their lives. It serves as a

source of information and entertainment from TV shows to news programs, documentaries as

well as films. Television provides useful information from all over the world and people are also

given an opportunity to see events and places that seem impossible to reach.

The popularity of social networking has not only affected people, but it has distorted what used

to be one-way medium of television. “Social television” is gaining attraction in many households

as the experience of television-watching continue to become striking through facilitation of

network initiatives and latest technology that links mobile devices to television. Mark Philip, the

CEO and originator of Sports media app RUWT predicted that synthesis between smartphones

and television will increase owing to technology advancement that will allow people to use their

tablet or phone instead of a remote (Pring, 2013). This drift has generated a “second screen”

where people relate with TV shows via a second digital platform. The following are examples of

ways through which television and social media are integrated.

First, incorporation of twitter in most of the national television programs. Twitter is known as the

leading platform in social media with over a billion tweets in about five days. Twitter has altered

the manner people watch television. People are given an opportunity to participate and not only

watch television. For example, people can take part in discussions revolving around twitter as

they watch television programs. For instance when watching election returns, people can use the

invitations and hashtags like #Election2016 provided by many TV shows to join the

conversation.

Secondly, people can vote for their favorite reality show contestant through social media. The

relationship between reality television and social media is innate. A television can give viewers a

chance to vote for their favorite reality show constant, but it will also be beneficial in return since

it will enable the television to know the number of viewers (Pring, 2013). Thirdly, Providers and

networks launch apps that people can use to view TV programs. For instance, Bravo Zeebox app

enables viewers to receive tidbits while watching and can still connect with other viewers

directly on social media through the app. Miso is another example of a company that work

together with www.Direct2TV.com receivers to enable users to view what is presently playing as

well as share experience through social networks (Pring, 2013). The move to develop apps that

offer behind-the-scenes content, incorporate show-associated buzz from social media websites,

Social network will give people a clue of what they are presently watching. Social networks have

also begun to incorporate content directly linked to television. According to TechCrunch,

Facebook are presently testing a latest sharing element that enables users to inform networks

regarding what they are directly watching from Facebook (Pring, 2013). The “TV check-in”

element is beneficial since it will enable people to decree what they are watching and also see

what their friends are watching.

Television has also affected American culture through integration of social media and Television

ads. Advertisers are amused by the chances offered by social television. Apart from including

social programs in a television commercial, apps like Shazam enable viewers to obtain richer

commercials when they utilize the app during the play of the ad (Pring, 2013). The advertisers

are able to inform the viewers to use the app for exceptional deals or acquiring more information

regarding a product or service in an advertisement. The app has expanded the advertising reach

of TV ads especially for viewers with smart devices.

Social television has a great number of followers, thus it can be used to reach millions of

viewers. People will become aware of incidences and events that are occurring across the globe

that could not be known easily. Also, people have different opinions and tastes regarding what

television programs to watch and thus social television come to their rescue. Watching

television through social networks is a convenient manner for every person currently since they

can watch their favorite TV shows. In addition, it allows people to watch the show they want,

when they wish to, such that they won’t miss a thing if they are not close to a television.

Furthermore, television is a very powerful tool just like other form of media, but it should be

handled carefully. The selection of channels and shows should be done carefully to prevent the

negative impact of television on children ("How Does Television Compare with Other Media?," n.d.).

In addition when television is integrated to social media, it will affect the way people utilize their

leisure time. The impact is projected to affect more youths than adults since they spend more

time watching television and social networks. Television face criticism from people who argues

that, it will consume much of people’s time such that they will lack time for exercise, reading,

family among other activities (Gary, 2017). Television contributes to people’s knowledge and

education. Television also provides insight regarding environment, political events and the

nature. I also agree that television has a great influence on American politics. For instance,

during election period the discussions, campaign news and speeches of candidates are aired

frequently. Political parties will pay televisions to bring ideas and present their opinions to the

viewers. Television has also changed sports culture in America since some sports have become

popular and people continue to engage in them.

In conclusion, it is evident that television has an immense impact on American culture.

Television is not only used as a medium of communication, but also as a source of entertainment

as well as a marketing platform. Television has recognized a great potential in social media and

hence they have integrated to form “social television.” The network initiatives and new

technology has improved television watching experience by integrating TV to mobile devices.
