CULTURAL MEMOIR 3
such as trips and sharing chores helped in learning and practicing various skills that I use today.
Criticism especially on physical appearance or academic ability negatively affects a child’s esteem
and should be avoided. Family identity also contributes a lot to individual practices and character.
As I grew up, my family had strong traditions such as wealth or yearly vacations thus we identified
a lot with it. The family identity reduced media influence and peer pressure on us, especially during
adolescence. My parents, for instance, passed our family traditions on to the siblings, which greatly
way strengthened our sense of belonging from childhood to date and me.
Beliefs
Since I was child, I was taught that my beliefs would guide me on dealing with friends,
family, and even strangers. Our elders insisted that these people have a high impact on an
individual’s routine, work life, and relationships. This is especially true when for example an
average student or one from a poor background has a teacher who believes they are achievers and
encourages them on the same. The false belief they build is what triggers their success. Sometimes
we think or believe that changing is impossible, and shy away from the idea of turning our identity
for fear of the unknown. However, it takes just a single shift in one's beliefs to change their entire
life. “A simple idea can singly determine one’s physical health, relationships, and financial status.”
Through this, by believing in my competency and capability, I was able to seek more job
opportunities after college. This opened doors for more interviews which landed me the dream job.
