Chinese and the American Culture
Culture is a concept that has been in existence for a long time. Some of the cultural elements
include beliefs, language, and different values. Different people have different cultures which are
perfect according to the members of a particular society. However, there are some elements
which are shared across the cultures and thus creating the similarities. China and United States of
America are two distinct regions with cultural differences and similarities.
Both China and the United States of America have consensus. ‘…structural-functional
perspective…harmonic and consensus relationship (Li 153) However, in China, the consensus is
perceived as an indirect communication element and thus a great way to prevent conflict among
the people while making decisions. Unlike China where consensus is a social element, in the
United States of America consensus is in initiated by the authority in the form of debates which
are meant to make particular decisions (Li).
Punctuality is highly valued in the two nations. Notably, the Chinese perceive punctuality as an
asset whereas, in the United States, punctuality is specifically meant for formality. Therefore,
appointments, social events which are formal as well as classes are some of the places where
punctuality is highly regarded in the U.S (Li).
The two countries have a distinct way of communication among the people. Communication is
especially effective in solving the conflicts among the members of the public. However, direct
communication is highly adopted in America while dealing with conflicts, unlike China where
indirect communication is greatly exercised among the Chinese. ‘ I just thought it was
communication issue…I realized I am not physically but also culturally away from china’ (Li
139). The phrase indicates the difference in communication between China and America.
The Chinese and the American cultures have both differences and similarities. The elements
which indicate the difference between the two regions are however practiced in both the Chinese
and the Americans. Some of the elements include communication and solving of conflicts,
consensus as well as punctuality among other elements.
