COLONIZATION AND DE-COLONIZATION 2
Introduction
Colonization and decolonization is one of the topics that have been debated for a long
time. Colonization predominantly refers to a set of processes in which a great power (First world
countries) control less powerful nations. McMichael (2011) says that when a great power
manages to colonize the less developed country, there are often visible positive and negative
impacts. Some countries especially third world nations usually feel that advanced country take
advantage of natural resources hence they rise to oppose colonization or merely say
decolonization.
Self-Reflections
I think tanks that legacy left behind by colonization is entirely controversial leading to
countries questing for decolonization (Kubik, Bourassa & Hampton, 2009). I believe that the
effect of colonization can be argued from positive and negative standpoints. What is more,
negative impacts of colonization have continued to exert suffocating and intractable problem to
native population. It is important to learn that colonization typically takes place when a country
is hunting for natural resources. For instance, a state with abundant of professional skills like
England is likely to enter a country like Canada to take an opportunity of professional skill
lacuna (Cass, 2013). In countries or states where there is plenty of professional skills, the market
value is predicted to be low.
The effect of personal culture, values, and beliefs concerning colonization and
decolonization can be examined and critiqued from pros and cons of it. In addition,
understanding the concept of colonization and decolonization has dispensed important insights

about my professional identity and practice in the sense that legal mechanism are supposed to be
implement to end various social injustices and oppression triggered by colonization. I feel that
colonization is a dangerous practice because it destroys the culture of the indigenous population,
promoted slavery, takes away a country natural resources and can facilitate stifling conflicts. A
country should be given an opportunity to control itself hence decolonization is requisite.
Through learning colonization and decolonization concept, it has expanded the horizon of
knowledge and skills in the sense that colonization is a complicated subject that entails a lot of
things (Nagy& Sehdev, 2012).
Working with Diversity
Social work practice has a significant role in addressing a myriad of issues enclosed in
colonization and de-colonization theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Before undertaking any
active part in intervening any problems of colonization and decolonization, social work is
expected to have a precise knowledge regarding the economic, social and cultural institution of
human development and behavior (Saleebey, 2014). The fundamental way of a social worker
intervening in the situation where indigenous population feels colonized includes counseling,
bolster legal process to end the practice and assisting the community to understand their tangible
social services. Demonstrating competence and respect when working with people from diverse
group affected by colonization would involve respecting their cultures, advise them correctly
especially on false stereotype and research well about the dynamics of colonization in that area.
Social Policy and Justice in Canada
COLONIZATION AND DE-COLONIZATION 4
Despite the fact that indigenous population of Canada played a critical role in shaping
Canadian history, they are still confronted with various social injustices such as racial
discrimination and colonization. According to Onderková (2016) historical, current dynamics
and oppression have caused native Canadian population to be faced with racial discrimination or
colonization. This has caused native Canadian to be met with high rates of poverty,
unemployment and, to some extent, criminal activities. The system barrier that promotes
oppression and social injustice for native Canadian population is racism practices. The justice
system of Canada that include police and judges have continued to discriminate minority groups
(Kubik, Bourassa & Hampton, 2009). As a social worker, the primary way of advocating for
justice and change would involve public awareness and education. Educate people about their
fundamental rights and effects of racial discrimination.
Conclusion
This study entails analysis of colonization and decolonization. The paper has covered
Self-reflection about colonization and decolonization as well as the role of social work practice
presented in the study. Racial discrimination is the main problem facing native Canadian
population.
