Comparison between Catalonia and Scotland Nationalism
Chapter 1
The European Union
The European Union was created in 1958 with the main target of enhancing the region's
economic factors. It is an association of 27 different member countries who are united to generate
political and economic community all through Europe nation and its environment. However, in
its start, it was founded by six different countries where their meeting was held in Strasbourg,
France. Through its progress, the European Union might reflect simple to many at its onset, but it
was unique due to an organization that constitutes in performing most of its current success and
ability to fulfil its mission (Rutten 987). Robert Schuman was the first president of the union. At
the start of 1958, other European nations started to join the union as most of the people with
different doubts reduced based on the principle of ‘Regular Assembly.' In 1957, emerged the Rome
settlement where two comparable communities were established and created having common
features which promoted their atomic vitality cooperation (Brubaker 250). However, due to some
of the changes in the union the Merger treaty was made to give some changes in those three ideas

in 1967. Again, the European assembly was established in 1979 regardless of some of the proposal
done in the Rome Treaties.
In 2009, the Lisbon treaty guaranteed that all strategies that were made in normal
administrative technique based on European parliament should turn out to be effective. It is clear
that some portrayal framework in the parliament should only be embraced both on individual's
state and its framework which had reasonable act over the union formation (Costa-Font 480). It is
clear that high illustrative framework joined with the commissioner of European to form some
external relation which will shape the commission. In the same focus, it is clear that council of
ministers came up with a new voting system which will better their qualification (Keating 12). The
European Council was formed under different union where Lisbon Treaty made some minor
changes over the same in the court of justice. Due to some of these proposals, the European Union
began in 1946 by Winston Churchill proposal (Goetz 263). Most of the policy allows goods,
finances, and people to interact freely with the other nations and boost their potential in business.
However, in some of its verdict, it also aimed at ensuring European governments are law based
and transparent (Keating 16).
In this union, the main idea of cooperation was to bring different countries together
through trade and solve some of the residual conflicts. In addition, this European Economic
Community was joined by other 22 countries in 2009 in a combination of improving the economy
of the union and stability Europe (Keating 18). It is clear that it started as a financial association
which was managed by different associations and security issues. Its name changed in 1993 from
European Economic Community to European Union which also showed a change of policies. The
European Union is guided by a different belief system which are of popular delegate to some of
the natives and who are specifically associated with some of the choices made by agents of Union
in parliament. Likewise, part of nations is being spoken in European Council which allows for
different improvement in some of its approaches amid the procedure of administrative
advancement (Keating 617).
All in all, it is clear that European Union maximized some of the potential outcome based
on its accountability and unification of border countries. It also ensures that all of its countries
which it represented have appointed different representatives who are used to maintain peace in
some of trading meetings and launch (Keating 625).

Nation, States, and Nationalism
Most of the geographers believe that in any political union each nation, state, and
nationalism should abide and have some defensible borders which will encompass some of the
human population based on foundational values and beliefs of its members. For instance, it seems
apparent that majority of American's have at least some of these basic values which are common
in their economic and political affiliation (Trigilia 312). Due to these changes, it is clear that
Europe has been marked by a war between nations and states since its time immemorial. Most of
this war was initiated by financial gain, disagreement and ethnic clashes over land ownership as
well as family rivalry. Despite all of this changes that Europe experienced during the Roman rule,
peace and harmony still prevailed which led to conquer the war (Gillespie 49). Prior to this, the
Italian domain had imparted different fighting among Europeans who did not abide by the law.
From the past, Europe has been led by different facts which led to fighting where most of the war
was grounded during some of the battles set by culture authenticity of people. However, the
solidarity of Europe has been developed through the use of war theme which forced unity, and this
idea created a permanent barrier between peace and enmity in Europe (Gillespie 57).
According to (Dogan 284) some of the verdict given are clear given that the nature of
Europe countries has been created based on their nationalism which defines some of its future
makings in some of the important decision made on a minority of nationalism which is the survival
method for most of the states. The unity of Europe started with only one person, Charles who
developed some new and self-conscious approach due to the fall of European empire (Brenner
132). In addition, he established some new ideology which was inspired by different leaders of the
nation among them being philosophers and economists. Due to some of the changes, it was until
Second World War when nationalism in Europe allowed in some of the genuine unification which
shared some of the themes established (Trigilia 321). It is however clear that the European Union
was part of Charlemagne's idea of establishing united European kingdom (Dogan 287). Due to
some of the boundaries and unclear decisions imposed based on diversity of opinions that were
given it was clear that Europe started its unification long time ago and was marked by its second
world war. But impact made by Charles and his death brought in peace in absolutely every nation.
Most of the war persisted changes of revolution and refinement of culture in Europe like
in some of Florence renaissance. Europe still faced different wars until Napoleon Bonaparte when
he rose to power who gave in some inspiration based on Charlemagne and Roman Empire impact

(Brenner 137). Napoleon established in an empire in France which adopted on dictatorship base
on some of his actions and summaries in his speech. Earlier on, peace in Europe was achieved
through strong leadership, and inspiration gave by some of the leaders (Weiler 30). For instance,
Napoleon always made sure that he was close to people and relevant in justifying some of his
position and power which will give the empire its history. After all of those essential impacts in
bringing peace in Europe Napoleon did not stay in power for long. Hence, the growth of Europe
state by Napoleon was granted as unsuccessful due to his attempt to conquer Russia. British also
handed facts over his overthrow in power. But the worst of it was that removal of Napoleon from
power brought in back chaos which was promoted by political ambiguity. Due to some of that
transformation that was brought be Napoleon European nations began to rejuvenate themselves by
adopting in some modern method which will be used to bring nationalism back. In doing this, it is
clear that some of cultural and contemporary nationalism reflected back.
In its early 1800, different nations were already established starting with Germany
unification and Italy. Most of the world wars that erupted were as a result of interruption which
formed an alliance that was against most of the rulers. However, it is clear that nationalism
sentiments and war did not come to an end after First World War. It is clear that Benito Mussolini
was the first European to attempt idea of nationalistic ideologies were most of the leaders
compromised with him in total focus. As a result, a total of 60 million casualties and 15 million
deaths occurred which was recorded during the Second World War. Most of the effect and
elimination which occurred in Second World War was accompanied by the dictatorship of
government powers from Europe (Keating 628).
During this era of war new European came up with new changes of unity in their mind. It
is hence of the fact that politics and war were not practical in some of the unification. Most of
Europeans believed that it is only through cooperation and unification we may obtain peace. Most
of the leaders believed that Europe had the potential of bringing in the aspect of unity. For instance,
the first aspect to unite Europe was through the formation of European Economic Community. It
is clear that by the end of 20th century the European Economic Community was able to give some
of the changes where it was changed to Europe Union (Begg 82). However, nature of many nations
can only be created based on the uncertainty of the region and some of the solution that needs to
be made on minority nationalism in their daily survival.

Comparative Analysis between Spain and the United Kingdom
The process of nationalism has been of questionable fact in both Spain and the United
Kingdom (UN) considering its flow of power from sub-national level to the state level. For
instance, Spain has created regional levels of government which relish the large possibility of this
national fact and its depth of powers (Maas 25). In this state, nationalism has been regarded as a
political agenda which was created before its federal state. Most of the politicians consider it to be
a pattern that the European Union (EU) has used on national level careers have different structural
evolution devoted to a change in United Kingdom national politics (Tarlton 865). Most of the
justification which claims on this self-determination ensures that most of the democratic principles
in Spain are based on the right of people who define some of the nationalism constructs in a variety
of different political perspective based on the parliamentary and judicial ruling. Therefore, in the
United Kingdom, the euro does not work in some of those nations though it was supported by this
platform of European Economic Community in regardless of matters of nationalism growth. For
instance, United Kingdom political facts are far much better off in its economic policies than Spain.
Radically these two nations are formerly monarchial. Though, they also have long-lasting
coastlines which closely border the states due to trade impact (Volden 355).
Based on some of nationalist it is clear that most of the pre-constitutional level in the
United Kingdom claim political rights to be the basic focus of some of the constitution. However,
most of their Catalans in Spain nationalist have given different point on this fact of politics which
is within the Spanish confederation and some of the link in Europe which abide with the Flemish
nationalist on their cultural diversity of the trading nation. Most of its social, political and
economic affairs perceive that regional nationalist movement in Spanish is more of policy prospect
than national focus in the United Kingdom (Porter 145). Some of their traditional facts show that
modernization and social solidarity undermine some of this political affiliation which focus on
nationalism in European Union (EU) and which is more dependent in Spain than some of the
multidimensional concept of national surveys that have been done over the last century. It is
however clear that Spain and the United Kingdom had a deep adjustment in some of their recession
which is backed up by their different amount of taxpayer money imposed by the government and
some of the nationalist (Smith 22).
It is clear that unfluctuating in place with those strong regional nationalist activities most
of their citizens have advanced in new dual characteristics which will feature in some of inclusive
Surname 6
of government focus which Most of Spain and United Kingdom Company have a close link with
European Union as they support massively on the bond purchase of Eurozone and bank exchange
rates (Volden 353). As a result of all of this, there are multiple changes in the political outcome
which raises some of the different issues on matters of regional government which is in position.
It is hence legit that most of European Union seek its legality on new modes of involvement which
in-cooperate some of the movement based on economic and social consideration (Porter 150).
However, most of the regions with this form of nationalism seek the autonomy of its representation
on matters of regional government in the United Kingdom. It is clear that Spain has a flashback of
recession based on its inherent flow of euro which actually has enjoyed stronger quarterly of the
economy in some of the market reforms that the United Kingdom (UK) (Volden 356).
In accordance with (Krugman 6) some of these apparent changes, are clear that both of the
two nations face same serious fiscal challenges which are abided by strong inflation brought in by
a budget deficit in every year and some of politics which are undermined by most of the citizens.
However, in Spain, most of its deficit data is reflected by slow growth rate which has lowered the
momentum of nationalism willingness through customization of the shortfall that occurred in their
future as accorded by (Marks 160). With the Eurozone that was the main verdict in European
Union (EU) most of the Spanish recovery in Catalonia has been of occurrence due to some of the
isolation with nations that were imposed in war. It is also clear that the cost of consumer prices in
the United Kingdom is higher than Spain as it has a ready market for some of goods and service
that have been imported. Also, issues related to renting prices, purchasing power and currency
exchange in the United Kingdom is higher than Spain.
It is clear that with (Marks 166) some of this comparison, are clear that they focus mostly
features on these two nations because; the United Kingdom is one of the European nations in which
most of the decoupling has been emphasized while in Spain this idea has followed a different trend.
In contrast to (Tarlton 865) an analysis of nationals in the United Kingdom and Spain, most of
their GDP is more of a regional alliance that social partnership which allows some of the sectors
to have new territorial of regionalist in the capital and labor market positions (Tarlton 872). Most
of the social and economic interest have their impact on territorial competition which brings unity
in some of European Union regional in cooperation which has delivery of different programs. For
instance, in recent it is clear that the relationship between GDP and road tone has been of notable
in the two countries where decoupling has been observed such that the volume of road transport
Surname 7
in Spain has increased by 95% and volume of road tone in kilometers in the United Kingdom has
reduced by 20% based on economic inflation of current U.S. dollars (Marks 173).
In regard (Noël 176) any change of annual hours and level of economic performance is
clear in the United Kingdom has it has strong working hours and economic performance which is
joined by strong and higher productivity of European Union (EU) in its national levels. Some of
the European nationals ensure that localization and internalization are some of the key factors in
this urban interaction of both nations. It is specific that most of the inequalities which have existed
in Spain on nationals are brought in by an immigrant population which varies from one locality to
another living in Spain.
Chapter 4
What Should EU Do About Nationalism?
The role of nationalism has been emphasized by that new political affiliation that is
merging in Catalonia in satin and Scotland. It is clear that nationalism in Scotland is exclusive of
human rights which form the determination of ethnicity (Requejo 272). However, across Europe,
most of the people are separated by Catalan activities which declare some of the political crisis
that entails in threatening not only nationalism in Catalonia but also in Scotland due to the impact
of European Union (EU) (Gertler 12). As a matter of fact, most of the decision made by
parliamentarians in Catalonia in the matter of independence has galvanized some of this ethics of
European countries (Oates 126). Also, Europe has seen the upsurge of nationalism based on the
formation of conservative backlash which has been an influx of recent immigrants in the nation. It
also appears that most of the leftist in Scotland movement have local interaction with European
Union (EU) which is against nationalism. Though (Pastori 276) gives out some of consideration
that most of the experts have said that most of the separatist in Catalonia can only be encouraged
by their bid of independence which enables them to gain strength, but unlikely it is not simple to
declare most of their own new republics because they have other legal paths which helps them to
achieve their European Union nationalism.
In accordance with (Conversi 24) some of the recent facts about nationalism, it is clear
that no European leaders in Europe over the last decade has recognized Catalonia as independent
but instead they present and emulate it as a united front with Spain impact. The European Union
which consists of some members from that states have exemplary given that most of the
government have different events in both states which reflect on this idea of nationalism but to a
Surname 8
certain degree, it may vary due to insecurity among them which is fragmentation that it is affecting
a nation like Scotland. According to (Guibernau) most of the information given by Michel, are
clear that in Europe they condemn violence and instead reaffirm political dialogue which will
improve the economy and political affiliation of Scotland and Catalonia which is in satin
(Guibernau 380). It is clear that most of the officials of the Spanish are against some of the
mandates which are addressed in seeing charge over some of the seditions to nationalism in
Scotland as they formulate it to be a matter of crime eruption which is against the prison sentence
(Le Gales 245).
Among some of the changes made it is clear that enthusiasm in Catalonia in satin is high
due to the sovereignty of people. For instance (Le Gales 255), gives different federal police we
met beating Catalan independence which a mandate was made by the international observers.
Some of nationalist believed that fiscal independence has a high impact of reducing this crisis in
Catalonia than Scotland.
In conclusion, it is clear that European Union brought in unity and interaction in a matter
of economic and social facts which has been in the system of governance in different states which
are bound by the union. For instance, in the past, most of organization and states were divided due
to economic and geographical changes. But after the unity of European Union (EU) most of Europe
nations have been able to return to their history of focus on economic which was a traditional
approach of many of states that ensured nationalism does not affect most of the operation and
powerful actions.
