Comparison: Hypothetical syllogism arguments
James Baldwin in the great debate against William F. Buckley argues that it comes to
great shock that the country most black people pledge allegiance to do not do the same to people
of colour. The debate between William Buckley and James Baldwin took place 1965 in
Cambridge, it focused on the idea that the American dream was at the expense of the American
person of colour (New York Times, 32). The basis of the argument was that although the colour
of the flag might seem the same of the surface for every individual, in reality different
individuals are offered different treatment. This means that there are individuals who are offered
preferential treatment at the expense of others.
According to James Baldwin it is the members of the community who determine the
difference in perception. In most cases, people living in the community do not have an
understanding of the different factors that have an impact on what needs to be done, In the debate
between James and William, James Baldwin takes on the responsibility of a mediator who
focuses on reality without bias.
The debate was based on the idea that racial issues in the United States of America was
post racial and the America that we are able to see to an America whose conception was founded
on division whereby the American black folk had to ensure that they worked hard to build the
