There are several requirements that an individual needs to meet to become a security
officer within the state of Connecticut through the licensing body of Connecticut State Police
under the Connecticut’s laws chapter 534 and 29 (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015). The
requirements are as mentioned below: The applicant should have attained a minimum age of 21
years. The certification is dependent on clearing the criminal background check where the
applicant is supposed not to have been condemned for a crime which might question his/her
integrity and honesty, sexual offense or felony (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015). Furthermore,
the applicant has to undergo and complete the security guard training course which should be
certified by the commissioner who is in charge of Emergency Services and Public Protection
(Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015).
The applicant should be in possession of a Connecticut State pistol Permit whether a
Resident or Non-resident. Therefore the applicant has to register with the state police as the
armed security officer (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015). The set of passport-style pictures has
to be provided to the employer. However, a set of fingerprints on a standard FBI fingerprint card
should also be made available to the company. Moreover, the applicant has to meet and also
maintain the qualifications which comprise of eight-hour course that is supposed to have been set
and approved by the Commissioner of emergency Services together with public protection.
However, the eight-hour course always covers public safety, first aid, regulations and laws that
concerns seizure and search, basic criminal justice together with the use of force (Davies, Hertig,
& Gilbride, 2015).
The firearm instructor has to sign off on the reverse side of the application form DPS-
1030 upon the completion of the course which should then be submitted to the exclusive
licensing and Firearms Unit (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015). The applicant has to obtain a Ct

Guard Card which is a weapon specific and hence the applicant will only be allowed to carry a
gun to work or away home that he/she qualified (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015).
I think the standards for the qualification of the security officer in Connecticut State are
high enough in consideration to their roles and responsibilities (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride,
2015). Moreover, because the applicants need to undergo a proper training under the Emergency
Services and Public Protection body shows that the standards are high enough since the skills
gained are utilized in performing duties like apprehending criminals together with evicting
violators, responding to alarms and calls of distress, regulating and monitoring building systems.
However, the fact that the applicants need to be 21 years and above makes them able to handle
issues to do with security in a mature manner (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015).
The law demands the applicant not to have been convicted of a crime which might
question his/her integrity and honesty, sexual offense or felony. This is because their key roles
are to guard against theft together with maintaining security, protecting the property and lives by
patrolling the specified areas (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015). Therefore if the applicant has a
habit of getting involved in crimes, then he/she might not work to perfection in that area hence
the standards are high enough. Last but not least, the law also demands them to be in possession
of a Connecticut State pistol Permit since on duty they encounter several criminals which might
turn up to be hostile (Davies, Hertig, & Gilbride, 2015).
