POLLUTION PREVENTION: A CORPORATE RESPONSIBILTY 2
Introduction.
Protecting the environment from pollution and contamination is a significant
responsibility which corporate bodies should observe. Application of technological measures in
companies especially the manufacturing industries should be accompanied by precaution
measures which involve minimal to zero release of toxic waste into the environment.
Involvement of corporate bodies in the prevention of pollution.
Of the total environmental pollution released into the environment, companies make the
largest contribution calling for more strict measures to ensure that they maintain a clean
environment. They are estimated to contribute to 80% of the environmental waste which calls for
advanced technologies to ensure that the waste is less toxic to the environment (Shrivastava,
2015). Some companies have tried treating waste which has already been released to the
environment making their efforts invalid.
Environmental Corporate Responsibility of Aflac.
The insurance company, Aflac, aims at providing enhanced healthcare to the society by
ensuring that the environment is clean and pollutant free. In an attempt to reach their
organizational goals while observing a clean environment, the insurance company has taken up a
variety of measures which includes technology and policies (Aflac Sustainability Philosophy
2016).
Aflac ensures that the waste products released by the company are properly managed to
avoid causing harm to the environment. In their operations, they aim at influencing the society

towards maintaining a clean environment. Through the measures put in place, the company has
managed to achieve its goal towards minimizing the levels of pollution to the environment.
Through reduced levels of harmful waste substances into the environment, Aflac serves as a
mirror to other companies encouraging them to observe their activities and use measures that will
prevent them from polluting the environment through their waste products.
Aflac, through its SmartGreen program, have proved dedication to ensuring a clean
environment as the program outlines the commitment Aflac has on the use and disposal of all the
resources the company utilizes. The commitments in the programs include;
a) The best methods the company can use in the management of the facilities it has.
b) Continuous follow up of business operations as a measure to ensuring efficiency.
c) The administration and maintenance of process wastes.
d) Making use of a policy of integrative maintenance which involves the company’s
employees.
e) Procurement of sustainable and environmentally friendly materials.
Aflac has maintained a right balance between keeping a pollutant-free environment and
satisfying the needs of business owners by implementing methods which result in maximum
profits to business owners due to the production of environmentally friendly waste.
In an attempt to protect the environment, Aflac Insurance Company has made use of the
following; engaging in energy saving practices, having an environmentally friendly facility
which releases minimal wastes into the environment, reducing any hazardous waste products,
and through the recycling of waste materials.

Corporate Responsibility of International Business Machine (IBM).
The international business machine, abbreviated as IBM has policies put in place in an
attempt to ensure that the company does not cause pollution to the environment and that any
forms of pollutions from the company’s operations are minimized. The policies and the
procedures IBM has in place aims at achieving better management of both poisonous and the
harmless wastes from the factory (Pollution Prevention - IBM 2011 Corporate Responsibility
Report 2016). The following are measures IBM has implement in pollution prevention;
a) Management of harmless waste.
No environmental harm is caused by safe waste making it environmentally friendly.
These types of wastes give a minimal scare to the company as compared to the toxic waste.
Waste materials from products such as wood, metal, and paper are considered harmless. Despite
the harmless nature of such waste materials, IBM has put in place measures to ensure that the
waste is not released into the environment. Examples of such measures include recycling of the
waste and reusing them within the company or used as raw materials for other industries. For
example, waste from wood can be recycled and used in the paper industry to make paper. Waste
from wood can as well be used reused as burnt energy within the same company. Nonpoisonous
chemical waste from obsolete machines is recycled by the company as well.
b) Managing poisonous waste.
IBM uses processes that make use of less harmful chemicals to the environment and
chemicals with zero toxicity. The company has ensured that the harmless chemicals replace the

harmful ones know producing toxic waste. Better storage, sourcing, and safe disposal of the
chemicals is applied since it is practically impossible to limit the use of certain types of
chemicals. The company is making use of procedures that allow it to increase production levels
while minimizing the release of toxic waste into the environment. The technique in use involves
integrating the sites of production to enable the company can have a total program execution.
Linking the production will provide IBM with central access and control where it can manage
the activities from all the sites of production which will result to maximum utilization of the
resources and minimize the release of waste into the environment.
Conclusion.
Companies should make use of strategies, policies, and technologies that ensure
maximum production and minimum release of waste into the environment. The government
should enact laws which govern the activities of corporations towards maintaining environmental
friendly operations.
