Counseling Session: Sleeping During Work Time
Problem Definition
Mr. Khan is the production assistant, responsible for the layout and print copy for the
City Times Newspaper. Currently, Mr. Khan often falls asleep during work hours; a behavior
never witnessed in his previous years of work in the company. As a supervisor, I intend to
intervene since Mr. Khan is one of the most reliable employees that the City Times Newspaper
has ever encountered. As a layout and print copy sub-editor for the company, he designs how
effectively stories, photographs among other newspaper items appear in print as well as the
conveyance of the headlines to the copy subs. He is also in charge of preparing the complete
pages’ output for printing in the print sites and controlling the production of the newspaper in the
print site. To sum it all, his responsibility involves the management of the output of all inputs
from the reporters, editors, photographers among other stakeholders in the City Times
Newspaper. Such tasks require a sober mind which can efficiently cross coordinate in between
the tasks. Mr. Khan is one kind of an employee who had in the past years held this position in a
very effective way until of late when I noticed the unusual sleeping behavior.
From the first counseling session, I identified that Mr. Khan is a husband and is a father
of three children. Her wife is an employee of a business and financial consultant firm in a

neighboring town. Additionally, her wife’s company requires that employees to be
psychologically prepared that they can be called upon to provide extension services in far of
places where they might spend at least a night away from home. Upon further interaction with
Mr. Khan, I also noted that he had enrolled in a diploma program in an editorial related course
and had plans of pursuing a degree shortly. We identified various causes and courses of the
sleeping problem. The most intricate cause of the sleeping problem came from the night studies
which he did after a long day work. He ascertained that recently he at most sleeps for two and a
half hours since the diploma is of great essence in his life. He also ascertained that of late her
wife at least sleeps out twice or thrice a week due to the aggressive campaign launched by the
company she works for to provide more extension services. In such days, he rarely sleeps since
he has to care for his children alone and hence the sleeping while-at-work problem is more
prevalent and notable. He also confirmed that he felt weak and unhealthy in the recent past and
linked the situation to the family stress he experienced. He also noted that he ought to have
spoken about the issue with her wife. He confessed that he was a little bit worried about his
behavior but thought that the problem would end soon.
We also discussed the adverse effects his problem to his health life as well as job
performance and the effects it had on other employees. He agreed that were it not for the support
he has been receiving from his fellow employees and his subordinates the newspaper would
experience a great loss since his job would let the entire crew down. However, we identified
some of the flaws that the City Times had experienced at this short tenure. For the first time in
ten years that the company printed the newspaper copies just to have more than 300 copies
excess and also for the first time in twenty years, the City Times experienced a shortage of
copies in the market. The scenarios did not pass unnoted to the senior management of the paper,

but it was not an identifiably fatal situation to create an alarm. However, we noted that a
recurrence of the same situation would lender the print process questionable for its functionality.
The paper was also losing its popularity, but in a gradual, seemingly insignificant way with a
fluctuating decreases in sales by 1-50 newspapers daily. Two months ago the City Times was
assured of selling 10,000 copies daily, but the sales have recently reduced to 9500 in the current
day sales. After sampling some of the most current newspapers, we speculated that the stories,
photographs among other newspaper features were ineffectively designed compared to earlier
newspapers. We speculated that Mr. Khan’s ineffectiveness due to sleep stress is to associate
with the fall in sales partially. We also speculated that the problem affected other sections of the
process of newspaper preparation since my fellow employees may mess with their
responsibilities when coming to my rescue. We also noted that his career, as well as that of
others including mine, was at stake.
We agreed that the situation needs an effective solution at the soonest time possible and
we came with the following solutions. Mr. Khan should at first talk with his wife about the issue
and possibly see whether they can come with a strategy to help. Among the possible solutions
was to check whether her wife secures a more situational friendly career. Another possible
solution was to seek help from a house help to assist in-house chores and wit the children.
Having an effective work plan which would give him a rest allowance of at least five continuous
hours was the ultimate goal.
Follow-Up Counseling Memo

Since Mr. Khan’s situation is notably critical, a follow-up counseling documentation seemed
undeniably necessary. To check on Mr. Khan’s progress, I decided to have three follow-up
meetings with him. The following is the memo the first follow-up meeting.

December 2017, we met to figure out the problem leading to your sleeping during
work time. We concluded that though the situation is unfortunate, it was also not acceptable. We
concluded so since it adversely affected the newspaper sales and could lead to inefficiency in
various departments of the newspaper and lead to job loss in extreme levels.
You promised to seek for all possible solutions which would keep the situation in check. We
agreed that your performance conduct could only improve by putting a stop to the sleeping

employ or through other means find a house help, to search for a friendlier career for your wife
