The golden rule should be the first initiative that will guide the creation of sustainable
lifestyle. This golden rule forms the center of many religious affiliations. According to the
golden rule, it is essential to do to others what you would have them do to you (Wheeler). In the
Judaism religion, they state that what is hurtful to yourself is not worth to a fellow man. Also,
Buddhism says that; hurt not others with that which pains yourself (Sharma and Monteiro). This
is such a simple principle that can guide humans in creating a sustainable lifestyle. In fact,
studies show that this is the essential principle of sustainability. Every decision we make
influences others even if we do not see or imagine (Cheong). This golden rule should guide the
way we keep our neighborhoods, protect our environment and create a safe environment. We
should all aim at creating a better tomorrow.
Next, people should live sustainably. This phase takes place in three essential steps which
begin with simplifying and minimizing clutter. This is the first step which forms the kick-start of
a sustainable life. The second critical step involves taking account of the full inventory of our
lives. This includes modes of transport, purchases of products and services (Sharma and
Monteiro). This step helps us understand how we are living and ways in which we can transform
into sustainable choices. Lastly, people should make a lifelong commitment. Just like the golden
rule, people should make decisions which are loving and caring. The first two steps help in
building the aspects of sustainability while this last step helps in maintaining the commitment
(McKibben). As the new lifestyle grows, it becomes easier to manage the process of living
sustainability. There are tools designed to help people make informed decisions, for instance,
Eco Footprint which calculates own footprint and areas that need amendment.
The issue of sustainability is associated with the fact that there exist little ways of
producing and re-using resources. Currently, the system revolves around stages of extraction to
