The Illusion
It was a bright Friday morning in Seattle, the sun was shining, and rays of light shone
through the blinds. Dez rapidly got up from the bed and opened the curtains and spread his
hands to relax his muscles. Dez narrowed his eyes as he looked outside and remembered that
he had to complete his project. Dez ran down the creaky old wooden stairs and was met by an
empty living room since his mother was already out. Dez proceeded to the kitchen where he
poured himself a coffee, and he went into the basement where he was working on a project.
In recent past, Dez's plan had become fruitful after he realized something odd in his project
and Dez had made up his mind to continue exploring the project as it grew. In the beginning,
the project would have been a part of his dissertation, but after realizing that the algorithms
were so exceptional, Dez decided to alternate his final project and make his secret project his
baby.
Before Dez continued on the project, he checked his Smartphone and realized that he
had a call from his professor regarding his dissertation and one from Ozark. Ozark had been
the only friend from the university who took an interest in him or his projects otherwise his
social life was nonexistent. Dez replied to his professor and set his phone down. As the day
ensued, Dez made progress and began to test his hypothesis. Dez was fascinated by science
but nothing compared to his new invention. As Dez started testing the algorithm, Dez became
frustrated by the machines' inability to respond to the code. Dez worked on the project for
days alternating with just eating and work. By Sunday night Dez was so exhausted, that
coffee could not help Dez stay alert, so he went up to get some energy drinks. After dinner,
Dez decided to continue working a little while longer. Dez experimented one more time on

the small machine that he used with his algorithms. After finishing the installation, Dez
pressed the Enter button.
In the alternate universe on a foggy morning, Dez was working out and listening to
some music on Seattle’s favorite station. As soon as he got home, he entered the kitchen and
was welcomed by several good mornings as he went upstairs. Dez said his good mornings in
haste and a good mood and proceeded to take a shower. Afterward, he went down to have
breakfast as well as watch the morning news. It was a good day as Dez walked out to go to
work. When he got to the office, Dez began having flashbacks of different memories, and he
started getting confused on who he was. In the evening he got home, but he was welcomed
home by someone he did not remember. Dez tried to recount on who he was, but his
recollections were beginning to fade. On the one hand, he was a scientist, a loner who lived at
home with his mom and the other was a vibrant professional who lived with a partner. Dez
excused himself and went upstairs to lie down.
After he lay down and closed his eyes, Dez suddenly appeared in a white space full of
nothing but space. Someone was asking Dez questions he did not understand. The enquirer's
voice was familiar albeit far away. The sound echoed "what is going on?" but Dez did not
comprehend. The familiar tone seemed very far away and continued to inquire "what
happened?" Dez answered by heaving a sigh to which the voice echoed as it became fainter
"you are a linear entity, and the more exist here, the more your being becomes entangled in
time. When you traveled through space, you had to know that there were consequences. Time
is running out, and soon you will go through a process of linear culmination." Dez babbled
and answered "I do not understand," which the familiar sound answered "linear entities
cannot exist here because they are corporeal, that is linear beings make subsequent decisions.
Once you jumped through time, you landed in an alternate existence which is interfering with
your memories because linear beings existence would not be worth living if corporeal beings

comprehended future or alternate events. The most significant element of linear identity is
ignorance of future or alternate events because the unknown defines your continuing
existence." Additionally, your nature is inherently destructive and thus returning home is
imperative Dez asked one last question as the sound began to grow fainter "what of here?"
The voice answered, "Linear beings cannot exist in two timelines, and while it is
inconceivable that beings could exist in such a manner it is vital for you to return now."
In the linear world, Dez was been rushed to Seattle General Hospital. There were
constant movements, in and out of the hospital and the triage area was busy with patients and
nurses. Through a recollection of a fellow student and friend, the patient had been found
unconscious on the basement floor and so a nurse received the patient, placed Dez on a
stretcher, and near it, there was an EKG monitor as well as the airway bag. The nurse began
watching the patient's unresponsive condition took the drug box and cut open the patient's
shirt. Soon after, the doctor came to assist the nurse after the doctor realized that the patient's
EKG pulse on the monitor was a flat green streak. The doctor's experience ensued when by
performing a supplementary EPI and after the doctor used a defibrillator which rejuvenated
the patient. "The patient will okay, he is very extremely exhausted and dehydrated." The
doctor said. After three and a half hours Dez woke up and Dez was pleased to see familiar
faces and breathed a sigh of relief when he realized he was home, and as Dez drifted away to
sleep, he realized time could be an illusion and instead of exploring, Dez preferred to exist in
his timeline as a linear entity.
Reflective Commentary
The short story was inspired by personal memories especially those memories that
involve watching various scientific films. In addition to the cinema, I have expanded my
knowledge through the genre by reading experimental novels and short stories. Indeed, I
Creative Portfolio and Reflective Commentary 5
made more of the work to illustrate the dangers of insomnia and dehydration that result from
intensive long work hours. In comparison to the material, I have studied before it seems there
is a correlation in writing in practicality. When working on this short story, I encountered
some few problems mainly with the technical aspects of the third section of the story. I
overcame those difficulties by researching widely on matters concerning emergency rooms
It is important to acknowledge that there are some roles other writers play in short
story. Like many contemporary, I have used fiction prose which has enabled me a learning
author to a channel for free fluid opinions as well as ideas as opposed to the other forms of
writing. The goal of using fictional prose is to allow writers to grow and form narrations with
concrete culminations. An example of a short story is Ken Liu's Paper Menagerie.” During
the drafting process, I opted for a contemporary, comfortable prose science fiction style. The
change was significant because I felt that in this age science plays an imperative role hence it
ought to be integrated more in creative writing. Ultimately writing should attempt to
campaign against cliché and not just the stereotypes of the mind but also of the pen as well as
clinches of the heart (Amis, 2002). Indeed, my incorporation of different ideas illustrates
growth in my writing, as well as the assimilation of various elements as my peers and my
tutor, points out.
This creative piece followed several phases of the creative process including,
preparation, incubation, evaluation as well as elaboration. All these processes are necessary
to make an original piece meaningful and artistic. According to Herman, situating stories,
positioning theory such as when using approaches with a theoretical framework such as the
hospital scene that incorporates both facts and creativity is vital (2009). The short story is
contemporary and uses free prose to disclose a perfect culmination. Nevertheless, the ending
is still a work in progress and could use an alternative finale.

In conclusion, I find that I have fulfilled some objectives including embracing
creativity with facts. Also, the short story transition is an objective worth identifying. In
future, this short story can be developed to become part of a collection of short stories. "The
Illusion" can be integrated with other short stories related to science fiction. Improving
writing is imperative as Minghella notes that creativity is the result of incessant ingenuity and
practicality that results in a work of art (2005). The narration will help me become a better
writer because during the writing development I have learned that all the procedures of the
creative process are required to make a functional, innovative piece. Perhaps it is essential to
echo Stephen Kings who noted that "superior writing nonetheless edifies the learning author
regarding style, refined recitation, plot expansion, the conception of realistic characters, as
well as fact-telling" (1991).
