Experience through political turmoil
Introduction
Under this portfolio, the drama script will be narrated which is much different from the
novel, short story or a poem (Batty, 2015, 121). Drama script is different because the reader will
not have a detailed description of a situation and the background for a particular event. Rather,
drama script gives the reader only an overview of a particular situation and the location and the
place of setting. The dialogue in the drama script will thus convey the message and the thoughts
of the author. This is the major difference between the drama and other literary works (Sawyer,
2015, 245). Drama is driven by dialogue because the ideas or the thoughts of the author is well
conveyed by dialogue done by actors in the drama. A good drama script can provide a clear picture
of the thoughts of the author by dramatic elements in the ongoing dialogue. It means that the
language in the drama can create conflict and elicited the feelings of delight, anger, amusement,
etc (Amis, M., 2014, 10). For it to be good, it should have some elements of suspense and be able
to arouse curiosity in the reader's mind and the whole audience.
I will thus describe an experience that I went through in our country through the time of
political turmoil in our country. This is an experience that has shaped the life that I have lived after
that. The reason why I wrote this piece is to give hope to someone who might be going through
the same experience I went through those times (Sawyer, 2015, 245). This is a memory that I have
never forgotten because it was a time of tough experience in my life. It was total darkness where I
could not see anything beyond that particular week. It was on 24th December 2007 when
everything seemed to be going on well in our village. This was the electioneering period in our
Energy Efficiency 3
nation. People had cast their votes well and went back safely. What was being waited for now was
the tallying so that people would know their president.
As the votes were being counted, people watched closely form their houses by watching
the televisions (Conkie, 2015, 21). The most preferred presidential candidate was well leading in
the counted votes, and people had the assurance that finally, he was going to win. Towards the
close of the counting process, something strange happened. It seemed as though the votes which
were being projected on the television screen was manipulated and the presidential candidate who
was not the most preferred stared having more votes. Sadness filled the whole village that I was
and many other cities where the most popular candidate had support were not happy (Ayckbourn,
2015, 41). The electoral commission in the country delayed in announcing the winner because
people had already suspected something wrong had been done to the results (Sawyer, 2015, 245).
The major part of the country was not pleased by what the commission had done.
Immediately when the results were finally announced, the whole country burst into
violence. The people who were in the opposing political parties started fighting each other, and
the killings were so rampant (Batty, 2015, 121). It was so sad that many people close to hundred
thousand lost their lives. In the village where I was born, it was different either. The people who
had migrated to the place were so much beaten, and other lost their lives because of the beatings
they received. This left me pondering what wrong thing did those people do so that they deserved
to die. But it was unfortunate that this happened because of the political differences that existed in
the country (Amis, M., 2014, 10). This was a clear indication that democracy was threatened
because if you had not voted for the candidate who was supported in that region, you would as
well face the same consequences.

Two days later when the war was still going on, all the youths and young men who were
of age above 18 were now forced to go and join other in the war. I was a victim since I fell in that
same category (Batty, 2015, 121). Being a Christina, it placed me in a very strange position not
knowing to do. I was then forced to join the rest, and I was forced to carry the bow and the arrows
so that I can join them in fighting the opponents (Sawyer, 2015, 245). I resisted to join for a while,
but to my surprise, I was so much beaten that I just had to surrender to their demands. I was so
much stressed because I could not just kill people and they have not done anything wrong. With
the big team, we thus went through a long distance crossing big forest heading to some town which
was inhabited mostly by the people from the opposing political party.
I made my calculations on how I was going to escape in the forest without them realizing
because I had purposed I will not join them in the act (Conkie, 2015, 21). I played my tactics well,
and I started reducing the pace, and after some time I just jumped into the forest and kept quiet.
The team proceeded without the realization that I had hidden in the forest. This was a place I had
never been before, and it was dark in the night (Amis, M., 2014, 10). I had lost direction at home,
and therefore I stood for quite some time thinking what to do. Thanks to God because I managed
to get the route which we had followed and I walked the whole night back home. It forced me to
hide at home for a period of close to two weeks because it was not allowed for any man to be at
home while the rest were in the filed fighting.
The period of opening school came, and there was no way we could open a school. This is
because the place where I schooled was far and I was to cross regions which were being occupied
by the opponents (Batty, 2015, 121). In the while of this process, we had a family friend who was
not from our tribe and people had threatened that they want to kill him. I stood in defense of him,
and I went through a lot of harassment just for our friend to be safe and to have his life preserved.
Energy Efficiency 5
I prayed that God would bring the turmoil in the country to calm so that the harassment would stop
(Ayckbourn, 2015, 41). Soon the situation calmed down, and we managed to free our friend safely.
He had to shift to another place so that his life would not be threatened again. Later, it is our friend
who came back three years later to alleviate the situation in our families by providing opportunities
for the scholarship for my siblings (Amis, M., 2014, 10). This reminded me that it is always god
to do good to all people and you shall have your reward.
All the people who participated actively in fighting others live now the most miserable
lives because the courses followed them by killing innocent lives (Conkie, 2015, 21). They are
very poor, and most of them died in funny ways. Something, therefore, to write this experience it
to bring education to people on the importance of watching every action that one does because in
some way consequence will come back one you would have to bear (Sawyer, 2015, 245). I was
trying to achieve the need of making people understand why it is always good to do good to people
even the ones you don’t know them. What was difficult in writing such a piece is that it reminded
many other people of the painful experience they went through this people where many lost
everything including family members (Batty, 2015, 121). The best way to respond to this challenge
is that it is meant to bring a bitter lesson to people so that such an occurrence will never happen
again. People should learn from the experience.
Another motivation that I got to write this piece was the effects of the war that happened
in Japan in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki where the effect of the war which happened in
the early 1900s is still being felt up to date (Batty, 2015, 121). Years later when I had attended the
literature and acknowledged the power of literature, it motivated me to write about this experience.
In coming up with this piece (Sawyer, 2015, 245), I followed the following steps; the first is to
read and watch other plays which have been authored by other authors so that you can have a full
Energy Efficiency 6
conception of what needs to be done. Secondly, is to come up with the main character which will
play a major role in the play. It is then followed by the decision on the conflict which should be in
the play. After that, you decide on the beginning point which is then followed by showing the story
in actions and speech (Conkie, 2015, 21). The author then pares it down and finally you write.
After the drama has been written, it is reviewed and then rewritten. After the above steps, the
drama will be published to be used in literature.
I strongly believe something that I have achieved through this writing is the attitude of
valuing all people no matter the political stands they have or even the party they support.
Something that is still a problem that troubles me is the division that still exists among the many
tribes in my country (Batty, 2015, 121). In the coming future, this piece can still be developed to
venture into areas of addressing why tribalism is a menace and needs to be eliminated by
encouraging intermarriages between the communities (Sawyer, 2015, 245). This will fall into the
category of a play as well since it will be giving an overview of what is in the mind of the author.
Something that gave stood out for me is the place of literature and more especially plays in the
transformation of values in the communities.
Literature is a powerful tool to correct bad behaviors in the community since it shows the
negatives of what the vices can do. It as well shows the ending of the actors who were so much
against other people. I have thus learned that we can use drama script to bring a great lesson to be
learned by the people in the society (Amis, M., 2014, 10). A good drama script can provide a clear
picture of the thoughts of the author by dramatic elements in the ongoing dialogue.

Reflective commentary
Drama script gives the reader only an overview of a particular situation and the location
and the place of setting. We have thus discussed so much about the experience that I went through
in our country through the time of political turmoil in our country (Batty, 2015, 121). This is an
experience that has shaped the life that I have lived after that. The title of this drama script is
experienced through political turmoil which I wrote after going through a tough experience of
post-election violence. This is yet to be published, and the statement of this topic is to bring out
the picture of what happened after some political turmoil in the nation (Conkie, 2015, 21). The
purpose of writing this is to give hope to someone who might be going through the same experience
I went through those times and to teach the people of the nation the importance of valuing all
people.
The work describes the result that happens after post-election violence which had a cause
on the different political stands people had (Conkie, 2015, 21). Many people lost their lives and
property simply because they exercised their constitutional rights of voting in their preferred
candidate for the presidential post. Because of rigging that happened in the electoral commission,
it ended up bringing about a crisis in the nation. It gives the hard experience the author went
through by being beaten simply because he refused to join the fighting team who were going
around killing people from the opponent side. The author finally survives and manages to rescue
a family friend who was residing at their home (Ayckbourn, 2015, 41). After that, good things
followed him because of the good acts he performed whereas the ones who involved themselves
in killing and looting items, they are now living miserable lives and the majority have died.
This means that the people who did bad things towards others were faced with the
consequences of their actions (Ayckbourn, 2015, 41). Curses followed them because the innocent
Energy Efficiency 8
blood which they shed. The ones who did well were as well rewarded because of their good actions.
This is an example of drama script since it gives an overview of what is in the author's mind with
no much details (Sawyer, 2015, 245). This is a topic that has been received well because it has
made people to realize the extent at which people suffered innocently just because of supporting a
political party. This is a drama script which will appeal to an audience who might be facing the
same situation in their countries. It has been proven that literature is a powerful tool to correct bad
behaviors in the community since it shows the negatives of what the vices can do. It as well shows
the ending of the actors who were so much against other people (Amis, M., 2014, 10). I have thus
learned that we can use drama script to bring a great lesson to be learned by the people in the
society.
