VICTIMS AND COMMUNITY 2
Background and context of the Survey.
There is a general acceptance that the role of combating crime in the society must have the
input of the community and the ordinary citizens working in collaboration with the criminal
justice system. However, many victims of violence in the society today sometimes feel that the
justice department is not doing enough to combat crime and put the criminals behind bars for
long enough to make them change their behavior and reform to be responsible citizens (Waldron,
Quarles, & McElreath, 2009). Furthermore, the number of young people joining gangs in the
urban areas is on the rise, and the number of convicted repeat offenders has been on the rise.
There is need to establish the underlying causes of crimes in the society today and how they have
impacted on the attitudes of the community and victims of violence on the criminal justice
system. This survey is set to address some fundamental issues in the way in which the society
today respond to the calls by the justice system to be part of the team helping mitigate and
eliminate crime in the society.
Research questions.
This survey seeks to establish the attitude of the society towards the criminal justice
system and the measures it has put in place to combat crime in our streets. Moreover, the opinion
of the victims of previous atrocities that include bullying on the streets, mugging, and violence
will be sought on their view of the criminal justice system in fighting crimes. It will be
established from the perspectives of reformed criminals as well as members organized criminal
gangs what their views on the practices of the justice system that are hindering reforms in the
society to help end crime. The community also has an important part to play in assisting the law
enforcement agencies to bring order in the society. Could the community be failing in its

mandate to provide information to the law enforcement organs and in engaging in local voluntary
activities aimed at sensitizing the public on the need for the partnership with the law officers
leading to an increase in the level of crime? I will be seeking to establish the confidence that the
public has in the criminal justice system.
Methodology.
The survey will be targeting a neighborhood with a high incidence of crime. The survey
sample will comprise a considerable number of respondents. A random sample of volunteers will
be picked from a group of applicants. To attain an optimal sample size, the data obtained in the
survey should not be skewed towards any inclination as to produce a bias in the true picture in
the society. To address this bias, the selection of the sample will be done with the perceived
attitudes of the different sample compositions in mind. For instance, the number of members of
the known organized criminal gang should not be so large compared to that of the ordinary
citizens and victims of crime. I will strike a balance in the number of participants to have a clear
representation of the entire society in the sample. This will be composed of the ordinary citizens,
victims of crimes, reformed criminals, and volunteers in organized crime gangs. Data on the
number of crimes that the public has volunteered to assist the law enforcement officers in
investigating will obtained from the justice office in the community where the survey will be
based.
To obtain information from the sample group, interviews will be used. This will be a
qualitative research measuring the confidence of the public, potential criminals, reformed
offenders and victims of crime in the justice system. The complexity of the issue of gauging the
attitude of a research sample towards the justice system is tied to some factors. These include the

ability of the system to meet realistic expectations of the society, response to crimes, socio-
demographic characteristics of the survey sample, level of education, age, gender and the
experience one has with the law enforcement officers. The experience may include an incidence
of victimization or neglect or inadequate response to a call for help (White Paper, 2011). As
such, data on the mentioned aspects of the survey sample will be collected.
The justification for the methodology.
The choice of in-depth interviews as the most appropriate tool to collect data in this survey
is due to its ability to confine the participants to the required issues to be addressed (Crossman,
2017). In this case, there are predetermined questions that the one conducting the survey will be
asking the participant. In such a scenario, the interviewer can get specific data that is helpful in
achieving the goal of the survey. Methodologies such as the use of focus groups would not
suffice in such a survey due to the number of data items that need to be addressed. Direct
observation would also not suffice in a case of qualitative research as this is not an ongoing
process as would be required in such a methodology.
