Critical Analysis
This essay aims at discovering the truth in the encounter between the Doctor, and the parents
with intention of examining and revealing the truth about Matilda's sickness. In the article
written by William Carlos Williams entitled "The Use of Force" introduces the situation where
the Doctor's professional opinion differs with the parents' position.
The essay mainly revolves around the four characters. These characters include doctor Olson,
Mathilda, and her mother & father. The sickness of Mathilda the daughter disturbed the peace of
her parents which forced them to rush her for a medical checkup by the doctor. Olson described
the mother as a clean and apologetic in the manner she approached Dr. Olson to attend to her
ailing daughter and immediately described the encounter of what happened.
In most cases, parents don't tell the truth about their children's problem or the children to hide
information from their parents as noticed by the doctor. Even though the father associated
Mathilda sickness fever but the doctor looked at the child and her behavior which informed his
opinion to conduct diagnosis of a sore throat an idea that both the parents dismissed in unison.
On the other hand, the mother linked daughter's problem with diphtheria which the lady had had
but the doctor insisted on taking a sore throat assessment as a professional. It was at this stage
where the terms used by the mother of the child disturbed the doctor and the word "hurt"
appeared to him as a warning of an impending danger ahead.
The title of Williams' article developed its concentration when the diagnosis process was
initiated and the child became repulsive and uncooperative. The doctor first informed the parents
that if and only if they accept to take up the danger and responsibility, the examination will not
be conducted. Upon the acceptance, the use of forces came in with a bid to save the life of
Mathilda. Just when the doctor almost achieved a successful diagnosis, the father sympathized
with a daughter who became violent and resistance.
The use has been used in this article when Mathilda's father disagreed with his wife and he was
