CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF A VIDEO TITLED: 'MISSED OPPORTUNITIES FOR
INTERPROFESSIONAL TEAMWORK'
It is the work of the health care team to provide quality patient care. The health care team needs
to work in collaboration to make the sharing of their unique patient care techniques possible, To
achieve the best health care for a patient. There are different distinct professions within the
health care which are needed to work together for the best outcome of a patient, and each
profession got different professional identities, knowledge and skill sets. However, barriers such
as lack of professional role models, perceived power differentials, and cultural competence
hinder the team-based system. The faculty needs to practice the core competencies for
interprofessional collaborative practice to overcome these barriers and promote shared decision
making, accountability, respect, trust and effective teamwork for quality patient care.
One of the principles of health care is the quality of practice. The principle requires that every
nurse, doctor and all the stakeholders who are dealing with the patient to show kindness to the
patient, be compassionate, people who are self-conscious and are competent with their roles and
obligations (Ireland, 2014, p. 9). Each is also expected to ensure a safe working environment for
their colleagues and that of the patients. In the video, the lack of quality of the practice is
evident. Each department does not provide a qualitative report which shows that they care for the
patient's condition. Every individual tries to prove that it is not his or her responsibility, but it
should get left in the hand of the next department.
Collaboration with the other members of the health care team is another principle that guides the
health care industry. It is well known that in each health care unit there are different
professionals with different ideas and knowledge (McCarthy, 2012, p. 2293). These individuals
need to work together for the best outcome of a patient (Ireland, 2014, p. 17). The team seems to
Critical Analysis 3
be uncollaborative and indifferent. Each appears to be self-centered with no space to hear what
the other one has to say. When one person is giving his or her take in the case, the others are
busy with their hair, phones, and files.
Professional accountability and responsibility should also guide all stakeholders in the health
care unit. All the nurses and doctors are expected to portray distinctive standards of professional
practices (Dobrowolska, 2007, p. 173). They are accountable and responsible for their actions
and attitudes including omissions and inactions. The team does not portray this principle. The
patient is said to have gotten discharged from the hospital without proper guidance on how to
conduct himself after getting released. Even after highlighting this issue none seem to be moved
by the inaction, but they try to justify the situation.
The dignity of the patient should get respect at all cost (Ireland, 2014, p 9). It is the responsibility
of every nurse and the doctors to know that every person is unique and respect their fate both for
the patients and the coworkers (Reeves, 2011, p. 78). Laughing because of the patient's
conditions shows bleach of respecting the patient's dignity and disrespect to the patient. Such is
the incident in the video where the patient's condition get exposed without a motive to treat or
offer to counsel to the patient. Lack of defending the dignity of the colleagues is also evident in
the video whereby none of the team members is given attention by the other members when they
are delivering their report.
Engagement and positive attitude among the team members is another guiding principle in the
nursing profession (Reeves S. P., 2013, p. 2). Every team member should listen to the other
member’s opinions and give their stand in the issue at hand. The members should not have
prejudice to another team member before he or she delivers his position. The video portrays high
levels of poor attitude and lack of engagement. When one member of the team is talking the

others are busy with other pieces of stuff that are not related in any way to the issue at hand. It
seems that the team gets divided since when one member is talking some are listening while
others are busy on their stuff or are showing ridiculous facial expression.
A health care team needs to work as an integrated machine with no internal conflicts and with
the same goals for the best outcome (Bridges, 2011, p. 6035). Each part of the machine needs to
perform its roles the best way it can before handing over to the next section. The video shows a
divided team where each is self-centered and not committed to achieving the goals of the group.
The team also does not seem to have a common goal or show any commitment to the universal
health care goal of giving quality services to every patient (Ireland, 2014, p. 23). There is no
cohesion within the departments involved, and many unaddressed conflicts must be existing
within the organization.
The structure of work in any healthcare promotes a difference in status. It, therefore, calls for
high levels of professionalism and respect for all the departments involved to work in harmony
(Gittell, 2010, p. 493). Each department needs to know that the other department plays an
essential role in realizing the organizational goals. Each department relies on the report from the
different departments to carry out its professional mandate (Hall, 2005, p. 194). In the video,
each department representative seems to be independent and immune from the other
departments’ report on the patient’s condition which leads to the failure of the team in offer
quality health care to the patient in question.
The team also seems to be composed of ‘knowers’ and ‘unknowns'. The setting highly affects the
way that every individual is handled in the group (Xyrichis, 2008, p. 240). The chairperson
seems to have different attitudes towards different personals in the team. She shows more respect
for some members of the team than the others. This is unprofessional delegation which makes it
Critical Analysis 5
difficult for her to get MDT to take responsibility. The team has gotten divided into sections
where the knowers respect the knowers and do not show interest in the ‘others' reports.
The primary concern for any health care organization is offering quality care for every patient
(Foronda, 2016, p 37). The meeting was convened to discuss the fate of the patient, but it ends
up that the patient gets out of the topic and internal wrangles take over the meeting. No one
seems to get dedicated to ensuring that the patient receives the best care by ensuring that a
follow-up is conducted to know how the patient is fairing. Even the counseling department does
not show any concern even after the report that no counsel got offered to the patient.
In conclusion, the video does not show any professional adherence to healthcare principles.
There is no promotion of dignity, collaboration with other team members, no accountability or
responsibility, quality of practice, and no trust and confidentiality in the team.
