can confess that it’s awful”( Clift,10). She is so hungry for stimulation she always lays awake
during the night as she watches the pattern of the wallpaper. In the long run, she sees the
individuals who have been trapped and placed inside the wallpaper. This idea is something a
young child can imagine on their own but not an entirely grown-up woman.
In the story, we discover that the interest of the narrator is not much relevant. The fact is
that she asks her husband if they could change the resident and move to other room,
unfortunately, the man refuses her request because she has no command on making some
decision in the house. Since the man is the one who has all the authority, the woman is put
vulnerable position just like a child who has no say. It proves that the role of woman and men
were different in those days, unlike the current days.
We can discover this in the way the storyteller patronizes and demeaning her man’s
actions “Give blessings to her little heart and articulate it with a big hug. She will soon be sick
as she always pleases you! However, let’s try improving the shining hours by sleeping until
morning for more discussion!”( Weinstock 30). Here we can learn that the husband disregards
her wife who is becoming mentally disturbed and it looks like she has already developed a
mental disease. If the narrator was a man, most of the people could have to listen to her and
understood her needs. But since the narrator is the woman her stories are worthless by talking
about her psychological state which seems to be less critical. I mean that the gender role among
the two sexes was not practiced fair during the 19
th
century. Most people were ignorant, and
various professions were carried out by male counterpart unlike these days where a woman can
treat a man, and a man can treat a woman.
