Societies are complex entities that consist of different aspects that supplement each
other to ensure the societies remain functional. Some of the main aspects include politics,
culture and the ability to identify and solve social issues. Among these, culture has
consistently proved to be the most significant. This essay will discuss the importance of
culture in solving social problems that face the society.
Since ancient times, communities relied on their different yet relatable cultures to live
in harmony with each other. Staying true to one's culture was regarded as a very admirable
attribute (Azzarita, 2015). People from all parts of the world did an outstanding job in
maintaining their cultural beliefs and practices, which enabled them to understand the various
issues that they faced, thereby allowing them to devise ways through which they could be
mitigated.
Culture and development are two words that were never used in the same context.
However, recent studies have shown that prosperous societies are those that have always
maintained their culture, even with the rapidly changing world. Striking a balance between
flexibility to changes in technology and maintenance of culture has been the perfect solution
to solving social issues for successful communities (Azzarita, 2015). Members of successful
or developed communities have cultural liberty that enables them to apply their cultural
beliefs and practices in almost everything they do. This makes them capable of relating with
people of different social classes in order to understand sensitive social issues such as the
HIV/AIDS pandemic from the cultural perspective.
In conclusion, politics only focuses on leadership and power struggles; but
understanding the people’s culture creates a platform for successful mitigation of social
problems in a way that is socially/culturally acceptable. Therefore, the aspect of culture is

more important than politics when it comes to handling social issues within the societal
context.
