More than often individuals interact with one another. These interactions yield positive
and other times adverse outcomes. In any social setting, such issues are always anticipated, and
for a rational society, they must occur. On the negative extreme, the administration authorities
are charged with the mandate to ensure that law and order are maintained and where necessary
the justice system takes over. The criminal justice system will entail a myriad of processes and
institutions charged with the responsibility to uphold social control in an attempt to deter and
mitigate crime. Those who violate laws always find themselves in the constraints of the law. In
the United States of America, for instance, levels of crime have been escalating over time.
Hence, this calls for measures to ensure that a society coexists in harmony. The primary question
is the role of the government and other law enforcing agencies strive to ensure the crime levels
are minimal.
Over the last two decades, technology advancement has been experienced. Technology is
associated with increased efficiency in the output of any service delivery, and justice is no
exception. Technology both in hard and soft forms has been used to combat crime around the
world. It has seen the streamlining and reduction of crime in several cities around in the United
States for instance. Accessibility of information is an essential aspect in predicting and
combating crime. However, the effectiveness of information technology in administering
criminal justice requires an in-depth evaluation to ascertain its contribution in mitigating crime.
Institutions, people, and systems are crucial tools for any justice system. The excellent
synchronization of these items leads to an effective system. Otherwise, it becomes a mess.
Robert (2007) stipulates the requirements of a streamlined criminal justice system, with
minimum bureaucracies. According to this author, social institutions have been McDonaldized

owing to the advantage this process offers when compared to earlier steps. Hence, this means
that systems have been made bureaucratic or somewhat sequential in a way. In a McDonaldized
environment, everyone is aware of his or her routine tasks ensuring a higher productivity
(Robert, 2007). With the introduction of information technology in criminal justice,
bureaucracies have made to some extent shortened the justice delivery time.
Plea bargaining is one aspect of the current justice system brought about by the
amendments to the federal laws. It is a standardized process providing what is popularly known
as industry “best practices.” When it comes to improving efficiency in the judicial system, plea
bargaining ensures that a criminal case takes the shortest time possible and more importantly
saves on costs and resources. Several benefits can be attributed to a McDonaldized system.
Quantification regarding costs, the predictability of a crime outcome and control are amongst the
well-known advantages (Robert, 2017). With information technology in place, the system is
predefined and tasks simplified.
Maureen Brown in her article, Nature of Crime: Continuity and Change, describes the
evolution of computers and the way they have aided in criminal justice. Thus, this entails the
accessibility of information, its storage, and subsequent usage in the process of administering
justice. There has been a gradual growth in hard technology including police tools to combat
crime, telephone usage, and investment in data centers. Massive investments have been made in
technology to aid in predictive policing technology, video recording capabilities on police
vehicles. In addition, security agencies have to assess crime in various spheres using techniques,
such as risk assessment, threat assessment in cases of terror attacks, and vulnerability
assessment. More recently, technological advancement in mitigating crime in major cities has
seen authorities spend in monitoring transactions both on the internet and phone (James &Gary,
Criminal Justice in Criminal Justice 4
2011). Through such a move, there has been a breakthrough in dealing with financial crimes
among other economic crimes. Crime mapping is also an aspect that has been enabled by the
technology when it comes to criminal justice.
Technology in aiding improve efficiency of the criminal justice system has also been
censured on several bases (James &Gary, 2011). First, the systematic handling of issues making
the system bureaucratic turns stakeholders into a machine like creatures. A routine at times is
tedious and may reduce productivity. The bureaucratic process such as plea bargaining
disadvantages several parties such as the innocent individuals who have to plead guilty to avert
the danger of a trial. Technology may be seen to have reduced the calculable costs in crime
administration but in the real sense has increased the expenditure. The primary challenge is
getting all the stakeholders in place as there is always resistance to change. Everyone has to be
on board to ensure the maximum benefits of technology in fighting crime are achieved.
Therefore, this also ensures individuals are not McDonaldized and they can produce maximally.
There is also the aspect of infringing on personal freedom where agencies deem the possibility of
a crime occurring vital than the probability. Hence, this happens where offenders are registered
and monitored as opposed to trying and controlling new ones. This, therefore, indicates that
there is the need to rethink the security systems when it comes to curbing crime. A successful
implementation of an appropriate strategy would ensure that everyone attains justice, namely
offenders, - and victims.
Involving security stakeholders in coming up with ways to control crime by use of e-
justice would be a strategy good enough to remove the bureaucracies. This approach in
conjunction with others such as closed circuit television cameras with facial recognition and
crime mapping would work as agents feel their input matters. Teamwork is productive, and

instead of using people as robots in the bureaucratic social institutions, their involvement in the
entire process would improve the embracing of technology in criminal justice and eventually
improve the efficiency.
