Deaf and Blind
Over the years, deaf and blind people have been associated with failure. However, the
myth of disability being inability is slowly fading away with more people with disabilities like
the deaf and blind standing up and being leaders in the society. Social groups, human rights
activists, and non-governmental organizations continue to work effortlessly to give hope,
support, and inspiration to the deaf and blind communities. They also lobby for these groups
inclusion in the society. The National Federation of the Blind and, the Deaf Resource Library
play important roles in the lives of the blind and deaf communities respectively.
According to the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), blindness does not define the
future of a person. NFB is a body that raises the expectations of the blind. They believe that low
expectations always create obstacles between blind people and their dreams. NFB argues that
blindness does not hold one back (National Federation of the Blind, 2018). They help the blind
people reach their potential and live the life they want.
The NFB has been on the forefront in helping the blind and people with low vision find
the resources, hope, and support they need to lead a normal life. NFB aims at promoting self-
confidence among the blind and people with low vision (National Federation of the Blind, 2018).
While encouraging high expectations among the blind, NFB gives the blind and people with low
vision a chance to exploit their potential and lead a full life. The NFB acts as a source of
inspiration to the blind and people with low vision.
The National Federation of the Blind through its website provides information on the
best ways to care and treat blind people. The array of data is meant for different audiences such
as employees, teachers, parents, the blind and those who are losing vision. Through NFB
DEAF AND BLIND3
network, blind parents, grandparents, guardians, and caregivers interact and discuss issues.
Through these discussions, experiences are shared and new techniques learned. NFB also
provides up to date information that addresses the evolving needs of blind and visually impaired
diabetics.
The NFB believes in the full capacity of the blind people, and therefore uses its power to
transform the dreams of this group of people into reality. Through the NFB national conference,
training, support and inspiration are provided to the blind community (National Federation of the
Blind, 2018).
The Deaf resource library is a virtual library that contains a collection of reference
materials and links aimed at educating and informing people about Deaf cultures in Japan and
United States (The Deaf Resource Library, 1995). The library also contains materials about hard
of hearing issues. The Deaf Resource Library provides deaf community resources for the deaf,
hard of hearing, their relatives, and friends. Through the deaf-related network resources Quickie
index, the stakeholders can learn how to treat and interact with the deaf and those hard of
hearing.
Information about the various state organizations for the deaf helps the deaf people
access services easily with the help of the organizations. Through the array of information, deaf
people and those hard of hearing can join organizations that best suit them. These organizations
provide training, support, and inspiration to the deaf and those hard of hearing. The organizations
may also provide scholarship funds for deaf and hard of hearing students needy students from
developing countries (International Deaf Education and Advancement Fund, 1995).
DEAF AND BLIND4
Forums such as Network for Overcoming Increased Silence Effectively(NOISE)
provides a platform to discuss deaf and hearing related topics. It also acts as a networking site for
the deaf community and medical professionals. Through the interaction and discussions, the deaf
and hard of hearing can consult with the professionals and receive help (Academics ushers
syndrome, n.d.).
Disability is not inability. The National Federation of the Blind and the Deaf Resource
Library provides support, hope and inspiration to the blind and deaf communities respectively.
Through the array of information on both websites, the blind and the deaf communities can turn
their dreams into reality.
