DECISION MAKING USING THE PROBLEM SOLVING APPROACH2
Introduction
Before choosing to advance studies and attain a bachelor’s degree, an individual must
have sufficient reasons to support his/her choice. The most obvious reason is to acquire better
salaries and promotions in jobs. In this case, the scenario is about two possible job opportunities
regarding two companies with each, having probabilities and conclusions. The problem in this
situation is, therefore, which company to work for and why. Subsequently, the first step is to
study the problem. This involves focusing on the advantages of working for the new company
over the old organization, and vice versa. The second step involves studying the disadvantages
that come with working for either of the companies and then selecting the company that is more
likely to be in line with the individual’s goals.
Analysis of the problem
There is need to analyze the problem and understand what exactly an individual wants to
solve(Halpern, 2014). Notably, I have worked with one of the companies before, and it was a
good experience. The supervisor of that company gives good recommendations regarding my job
performance showing that I gave the work my best. Nevertheless, the competing company has a
better salary offer that exceeds the previous with $15,000. However, working for this new
organization would require an individual to proceed with studies to attain a master’s degree.
However, the company does not offer any training for the studies, thus, that will be an
individual’s expense. The old company that I worked for offers tuition reimbursement, which is
therefore, an advantage if a person is to study for his/her masters. The $15,000 additional salary
appears to be a great deal. Notably, an employee is required to attend college for masters and that
extra pay might as well be even lower than the school fees. Conversely, if the fee requirement for
the master’s course is too small in comparison with the benefits of this company, it is as well a

good offer. Regarding the decision to stick to working for the old company, it will be a great deal
to maintain the post and get reimbursement for a master's classes. However, an individual needs
to be certain that he/she would get a promotion and if so, analyze the estimated salary increase.
Similarly, it is important to identify the costs associated with working for each of the companies.
This identification can then help a person to determine which of the two companies has better
returns after considering all expenses.
Options generated
The first possible option is to continue working for the old company until an individual
attains his/her master’s degree. This is following the possibility of getting reimbursement for
attaining this degree from the previous company. This will not take a long period. After attaining
this degree, a person can then consider seeking a job in the new company. Notably, the person
will have attained a master’s degree and this will save him/her a great cost.
The second option is to secure the chance in the new company. Seemingly, with such a
good salary for a start, an individual is likely to get even better salaries if his/her performance
appeals to the management. From the past, companies offer a relatively lower salary, and they
are likely to offer better salaries in future once they realize an individual’s level of productivity.
Consequently, this is a great opportunity to work for a well-paying company.
The third option is to utilize the attained bachelor’s degree to seek promotion in the
earlier company. The greatest advantage is that the supervisor of this company approves I am a
performer. The possibility of getting a promotion and earning a better salary is high. The good
thing is, an individual will still have an advantage of studying for his/her masters at a lower cost,
and it is not necessary if one gets better salaries.

Lastly, an individual can decide to work for the new company without necessarily going
for a master’s degree. When the job was offered, there was no such condition that a person must
have a master’s degree. The whole idea about attaining a masters and working for the new
company is because every other employee has a master’s degree and I will probably need the
same to fit in well.
Evaluation of options
Since I now have four possible solutions, there is need to evaluate each by studying the
possible advantages and disadvantages before coming up with the best out of the outlined
solutions. This is necessary because each of the solutions has advantages and disadvantages but
one must have weightier advantages as compared to the rest (De Bono, 2015).Regarding the first
solution that involves taking advantage of the old company then later moving away, there is a
great advantage and a risk as well. The advantage is that an individual can study for masters at a
subsidized cost. However, the risk is, by the time of clearing with the master’s degree in the
initial company, the chance in the new organization may be gone.
The second option seems to be a great risk too. There is an assumption that a good
starting salary is a sign that there is a possibility of better salary increments. What if the salary is
consistent and the cost of studying a master’s degree exceeds the benefit of the $ 15,000 salary
difference from the initial company’s salary? Even so, I will seemingly get other allowance just
like the car and relocation allowance.
The third option of seeking promotion in the initial company will be a great deal if the
promotion goes through. The first advantage is that a person can still be in that company, and so,
get tuition reimbursement. Again, if the Management decides to promote an employee, the
chances for a salary increase will be high. However, if the promotion request does not go

through, an individual may have wasted a great chance of working in a new company in with a
possibility of a salary increase.
Decision made
Out of the many possible solutions, it would be beneficial to work for the new company
because it offers a good starting salary. Even if an individual has to study for his/her masters,
there is an assured salary increase and relocation allowance as well as a car allowance. It is better
than working for the initial company just because they provide a tuition allowance. Moreover,
the experience in the new company is better because a person will be working with colleagues
who have attained their masters and are equally a good challenge.
Reflection and implementation
I feel that this is the most convenient decision. I, therefore, will implement it by accepting
the job offer at the new company. With time, I will keep checking to ensure the earnings I get
meet my financial needs. Since I assumed future salary increment, I will need to offer my best in
the company since it is my performance that will attract new salaries.
Conclusion
From the above, it is clear that by following through the problem-solving process, I can
come up with a favorable decision. It gives me a chance to understand the problem, to develop
possible solutions and then to evaluate each solution. Subsequently, that will results in a perfect
choice for a solution from the many alternatives.
