Democracy
Democracy, also known as the rule of the majority, refers to a form of governance in which
the citizens exercise their supreme power directly or elect agents from the public to represent them
through a governing body such as the parliament (Almond et al., 16). A democratic system allows
participants to solve conflicts without controlling their actions and outcomes. Democracy
encompasses four main elements which include the participation of citizens in politics,
safeguarding human rights, a rule of law which is observed by all citizens, and the participation of
citizens in fair and free elections that are held so as to replace the government.
Apart from being the second half of the colonial era, the eighteenth century was the birth
of American independence when all the thirteen English colonies developed distinct democratic
structures during the Great Awakening (Markoff 9). All the colonies had elected legislatures, and
citizens would meet in town halls so as to consult on legal matters such as the enactment of laws.
The Mayflower Compact was an important milestone in the democracy of citizens since it was
based on the principle of equality and stated that all community decisions would be made through
a consensus. All the adult male citizens signed the document as a sign of acknowledgement.
William Penn, Williams Rogers and other religious leaders brought the freedom of religion among
the colonies in the eighteenth century. The freedom of the press was first exercised during the trial
of Peter Zenger, after which the Press began to report on different issues. Madison crafted the first

constitution which consisted of three branches of the government and guaranteed power to
America.
The colonies in the eighteenth century were less democratic due to the evolution of slavery.
New York had the largest number of slaves due to the absence of legal code that regulated slave
trade (Markoff 17). Although the Northern states made an effort to end slavery, the invention of
the cotton gin in 1793 increased slave trade due to the increasing need for slave labor force.
Indentured servants in the colonial era signed contracts stating that they would work for specified
years in exchange for basic needs such as food and shelter. The fact that a king ruled the eighteenth-
century colonies means that there was no democracy because all the colonists were required to
swear their loyalty to the king.
A democratic government is the best because it puts the interests of the citizens on the
forefront since they have a right to choose their preferred representatives. Since democracy is
based on equality, everyone is entitled to the same social, economic and political rights, and there
is no discrimination based on religion, sex or social class (Munck 22). Democracy hinders the
monopoly of the ruling power by ensuring that all the policies and laws are fair. Democracy brings
a sense of responsibility to the elected officials, who are expected to maintain dedication towards
their duties and make sensible decisions on matters affecting the public. Citizens learn more about
policies and the law as they take part in the democratic process, such as during elections. The
media, through television and radio, plays a major role in educating the public on legal matters.
Generally, democracy moulds the public into responsible citizens by creating a conducive
environment that improves their characters, personality and good habits as they exercise their legal
duties.
