Determinism in Philosophy: The Pursuit of Wisdom
For many years there has been a problem in understanding the free will and determinism
and in the book by Pojman, Louis P called Philosophy: The Pursuit of Wisdom much have been
discussed. Determinism explains that people are free to make decisions and the cause and effect
determine each choice we make. I have much interest in this and that why I choose it.
Most exciting part is that there have always have been an issue on the relation of free will
and determinism, the reason is that when it is free will there is the absence of morality, good or
evil and also right and wrong. This means that what is we perceive good or wrong is determined
before and thus people have no creativity or free will to choose. We all make decisions, and
these decisions are defined by what we perceive or is determined by the society as right and
wrong. Pojman agrees to the above and states "there is the mistakable institution of virtually
every human being that he is free to make decisions, but it's all determined by the society we live
in”(Pojman 218). Most people try to choose things that will bring happiness and avoid the
painful choices. It means each choice has a reason as in my life I have a choice of studying
philosophy as I need it in understanding how people reason. Whatever decision we make there
are causes and effects which is controlled by brain thus we are all in control of all choices we
make. Pojman argues that "if determinism is true and our actions are merely the product of the
laws and the nature and antecedent of state of affairs then it's not up to us to choose what we do
