Introduction
Terrorism has been a global talk in the recent past with more and more illegal groups
being born and executing acts of malice, injustice and killing. Terror attacks can take different
form from use of atomic and nuclear bombs to crashing of airplanes into buildings to use of
chemicals and even biological weapons. This excerpt focuses particularly on the suicide
bombing as the latest embraced form of biological weaponry terrorism. Biological weapons as it
sounds are one of the widely known Weapons of Mass Destruction and cannot generally be
justified on military grounds. This is due to their large scale destruction potential and their
targets which are mostly civilians. They can be defined as living organisms or contagious
constituents derived from them that used to cause death or sicknesses to people, plants or
animals. This is common in the military arena but is also being used in a wider spectrum by the
terrorists. This has raised terror amongst people on the probabilities, regularity and effect on their
daily routine. Biological weapons can either be a virus, a bacterium (10) or even a human being
with the sole intention of causing harm to the targeted population usually motivated by rage,
warfare or promised reward. In the recent past, the use of chemicals, viruses and bacteria like

Salmonella typhi has been banned but on the other side the use of human beings as agents of
terrorism has increased being seen as an efficient method of carrying out terrorism.
Implication of suicide bombing as a biological weapon
Suicide bombing as a type of biological terrorism has been a hard nut to crack. It is
becoming widely used by the terrorism front to achieve their agendas. It is a tactic so refined and
organized that is hardly noticed by anyone not even the military. It is the most hostile kind of
terrorism. Suicide bombers believe in Martyrdom and the destruction of ‘God’s enemies’. This
has exacerbated fear in the global front leading to people of the Muslim religion to be viewed as
potential perpetrators. The bomb can range from a bomb vest, hand grenade or even a grenade
earing (1). Young children from as young as 13 to adults as old as 55 volunteer themselves to
take part in ‘God’s wrath’ mainly pushed by the lack of employment (40 70 % unemployment
rate) and hope in life amd these volunteers are in no short supply. These people are lured and
convinced that taking part in the suicide bombing would make their living worthwhile and would
get great rewards in heaven while their families get financial token for the sacrifice they make. In
the Middle East countries, martyrs are hailed and seen as important people and the doctrine is
widely taught from kindergarten schools to universities thus programming the minds of those
taught that they have enemies that ought to be eliminated. In Palestine for instance, people have
been moved to a state of quagmire where living and dying makes no difference (4). They lack
hope of living due to deplorable living conditions and become desperate, desperate to causing
trouble or solutions to their problems by taking their lives in a ‘Martyrdom’ form. The result of
this is, no one is free to walk into a mall to do shopping or sit in a park for long hours, go to a
movie with friend in the theatre or watch soccer or football from the sports ground or even work
without thinking of a possible attack. It has turned the normality all around where you have to be

scanned before you enter a building while being apprehended which makes it creepy, embracing
and uncomfortable but it’s the new norm of society.
A suicide bomber does not require escape plans, rescue team or delayed detonation
because it involves taking his/ her own life and those of others. This has resulted to the great
success suicide attacks have had in the recent past accounting for around 32 % of deaths
resulting to terrorism attack. Various terrorism groups have mushroomed and use this tactic
widely including, Kurdistan workers Party, Chechen separatists, Taliban, Al-Qaeda (12),
Liberation Tigers, Al-shabab, Hamas, Ansar al-sunna, Islamic Jihad, Al-Aqsa Martyrs brigade
and Hezbollah. As a result of these tactics of terrorism, more than 45,000 lives have been
claimed as of 2015 in about 40 countries. A lot more have been injured and the scars are not
healable. Security tension has increased in the target countries and freedom of movement and
conventional gatherings have been feared of. Security advancement technologies have been
innovated like the laser beam scanners for weaponry. In the attacking countries, more children
are losing their lives to this devastating ‘heroic acts’ and anguish is left with the bereaved
families. Islamic doctrines have been fine tuned to brainwash those giving themselves for suicide
bombing (5).
There is no course of action without gains and setbacks. Suicide bombing as a biological
terrorism tactic is seen as a successful game play as little effort is required to cause harm and
create an audience. It is the revolution of terrorism and is defines as the despair cry for help (4)
and the solution offered is own death to end of suffering and making other people pay for owns
suffering. The advantages on the attacking nation of using biological weapons in terrorism are:
The bomb is in itself very effective
Surname 4
Their potential of inflicting heavy fatalities and injuries (1, 3, 12)
Results to mass panic among civilians
They are cheaper to acquire as; for suicide bombers, most are volunteers
Does not require complex technological skills to install and execute
It weakens the economy of a country
It attracts media attention
No fear of information leak because there is no getting caught, interrogated or executed.
The disadvantages include:
Grief for the bereaved (7)
Loss of life of the perpetrator
Portraying of a negative picture of the Muslim religion
Intensifies countermeasures of the target countries e.g. the killing of Osama bin Laden
Increases deplorable living conditions in the terror country e.g. Somalia
Conclusion
The negative impression bestowed on the perpetrators of terrorist acts has seen many
result to offering themselves for the job. The target has shifted to an all-inclusive age and gender
from the initial focus on young, unemployed and unmarried male youths. Deplorable and
desperate living conditions has aggravated the need to end life as a solution to a person’s
problems and the rewards put on the table like Martyrdom, acceptance in heaven by the seven
virgins and cash rewards to the bereaved families. Horror and panic have been the results of
these acts. The choice if using this kind of biological weapon is due to its cost and time
effectiveness. Though measures have been put in place, it is becoming difficult to fight terrorism.
